Batten down the hatches and secure the garbage cans if you live in Cleveland or Erie, PA or Buffalo.
This arctic front going through here has made the winds absolutely howl since about midnight. I'm guessing sustained 40 with gusts to 60.
My power had been blipping in and out all night, a few seconds at a time, probably 50-60 times since about 12:30. So, I had to go do the unplug everything routine, plus constantly deal with the power warning alarm on my mother's O2 concentrator.
Worst of all, 75 lbs of scared dog who whined, nudged, and generally refused to settle down, didn't sleep at all.
So, guess who else got no sleep? Yeah me.

good luck to you and yours.
(as for the pooch--my vet told me milk chocolate can have a calming effect on dogs--at least it did for mine after i discovered she ate half a chocolate cupcake and acted out of character--completely indifferent--about a horrible thunderstorm later that night. after that we'd give her a couple little bites of 3 musketeers and that seemed to help a lot)

(2,397 posts)I can't believe your vet actually recommended the stuff. Of course it depends on the weight, general health, and age of your dog, but all chocolate is potentially deadly to dogs as it effects their central nervous system. Of course they love it, who doesn't. One little taste can lead to a deadly sneaking of a much larger amount when we're not paying attention. I almost lost my dog when she got into a quarter pound of M&Ms once.

just for the record--i didn't say put a bowl of candy down for a dog--i said a couple bites of milk chocolate has a calming effect. also, i didn't mean as a regular diet--i meant instead of having your dog shake/shiver/quake/freak out/go into panic attack mode over bad storms.

Lokey
(108 posts)Somewhere around 230-3am I was rudely awakened some crazy loud bang. I think our screen door got blown open and smacked against the house. The news said we had some 50+mph gusts.
Our 110lb baby wedges his big butt under the desk during storms. Funny to see how small he can get.
It's going to get super cold now so bundle up.

(11,791 posts)My dogs are spooked when they go out because of the wind. But fortunately, the jitteriest of my dogs is on phenobarbital for epilepsy, and the mess calm him down.

(23,338 posts)Yeah, Saturday night I got up around 2:30am because of the wind. I had to batten down a piece of drainpipe that was banging against the house, and I took down the flag before the wind ripped it down. Then moved the car from under the tree, figuring some branches might come down (and some small ones did). Not bad, though, it was about 40 degrees out.
Computer is on a battery backup, so no problem during the short outages. I don't know the wattage on a O2 concentrator, but a battery backup might be useful there.
Calm now, and hey, it's still above zero (two degrees). I dug my old down-filled parka out of the basement, it's been a few years since we had temps like this.
