More about the resolutionaries at the gym

I know this stirred up a hornet's nest yesterday, but I thought it was kind of fun.

I was in the gym today. I can't see who is going in and out of the office while I am doing cardio, because my back is to the office. But when I am using the machines, I can see who is going in and out of there. They had one person after another signing up for new gym memberships.

The PTB at the gym tell me that sixty percent of them will quit by Valentine's Day. That is their official statistic.

You said you're annoyed at how crowded it is when these people join, but consider how much your membership fee would be if they didn't join every January. If any gym or club only charged the people who actually showed up, your fees would be considerably higher.

So, you can enjoy the fact that putting up with a month or two of crowding means you save money...or just continue carp about them - your choice.

My gym is insanely cheap. Only $10 a month and it has more than enough stuff to meet my needs. Even at the most crowded times, I've never had to wait for anything. I doubt they would charge so little if there weren't people who joined and then stopped coming (and not just at New Year's either).

January and February sees hordes of these folks, new to the game, and all over the place.

They are normally gone, except for the truly dedicated, by Feb. or March.

Every year.

This is not an official statistic. This is some dufus offering small talk.

I would not be surprised if the gym did keep track of people enrolling, and when they did so.

And how long they stayed.

We had a trivia contest at the gym before Christmas. There were questions about nutrition and fitness. This was one of the questions, and it was backed up by statistics kept by the gyms owned and franchised by Anytime Fitness. When I go back Wednesday, I will get some further information.

If you think they keep of track of data so they can make the claim made in the OP, well, I've got some ocean property to sell you. It's in northern Nevada. It's cheap!

And, unless CA falls off into the ocean, there isn't any ocean property in Nevada, lol!

Every month, they post the names of the ten most "active" members. That is the people who have been there the most times that month.

I have logged in to their website and found the dates and times that I have been there over the last year. Tanning is logged separately. I don't care for tanning beds, so I don't do that at all.

They also know how quickly the new members taper off, then stop going.

They do this to moniter staffing levels, as the gym is owned by the city parks and recreation department.

Less visitors, less people needed at the gym to run things, less hours sheduled for employees.

The retention level for a new member to make one year as an active was around 20% IIRC.

Much of that information is made public to the taxpayers.
