Cranium, a briefly lost African crowned crane, was reunited with its owner, Hap Hansen of Encinitas on Tuesday morning at the county's animal shelter in Carlsbad. Hansen, right, and County Animal Services Lt. Dan DeSousa watch the bird get a view of the container for its ride back home.
Heres to Hollywood endings: An East African crowned crane found on the streets of Encinitas over the weekend was returned to its owner Tuesday morning in Carlsbad, concluding a brief mystery about an unusual bird.
The creature, named Cranium, greeted her owner by pecking at his ring, said county animal control Lt. Dan DeSousa.
It was a happy reunion and Cranium is safe and sound, DeSousa said. Everything went very well.
On Saturday, the bird was the subject of much speculation after a woman who lives near Calle San Clemente and Calle Santa Cruz returned home from walking her dog and found the crane in her driveway. Birds of that type are normally found in the savannas of Africa and dont migrate, let alone fly halfway around the world.

(32,969 posts)but why does he think he needs to own one? and since from the newspaper link it seems she is the only one. maybe she was looking for company?
Central Ohios' recent experience with exotic animals is a tragic reminder of the error of owning exotics.
still, amazing photos and a very pretty bird

(9,865 posts)...deadly grey, flat and unnatural environment this bird is forced to live in. It looks like jail.
Don't humans understand anything? All those colors on the bird mean that it is evoled to seek and need lots of color in its environment---and to hear lots of natural savannah noises. No wonder it escaped.
The whole story is sad.
