Ever have a freak experience where a piece of broken glass cuts your eyeball?

Well it happened to me last Thursday and all I can say is "OUCH!!!"

I was taking some stuff over to my estate sale and had a couple of loose crystal ashtrays on top of a box...I slid one over to fit on top of the other and for some reason the one underneath decided to chip and with extreme force it flew up and bounced off my nose and nicked my eyeball...

Youchhh! Did that ever hurt!

So, being stoic and without insurance I thought I would tough it out...

But this nice lady who came to the sale yesterday said it was serious and offered to drive me to a clinic, and I accepted...Turns out it was already infected and I'm on meds now and I feel so much better...I have a scratched cornea they say it heals rapidly...I hope so because the pain I felt was pretty much unbearable...

The nice lady who helped me was looking for a vcr that worked and I had one and gave it to her in appreciation because if not for her I'd be dealing with an infected eye and even worse pain!

How awful!

She was an angel in disguise, I think. And how terrific you had what she wanted.

Take care, and it's great to have you back!

Dear Peggy,

It's good to hear from you, I'd like to think I'm back because I have steady internet connection now but things have changed so much!
My sister lives in Orange County, I've been thinking of relocating there...but I love Portland too so there you go!

welding rod, about 1/16 of an inch in diameter puncture my left eyeball about 25 years ago.

It was on a shelf sticking out in the shop I was working at, just around a corner.

Came out of emerg with a patch over it - wore it for over a week.

Fortunately, no permanent damage - vision is still normal today,

But yeah, HURT LIKE HELL!!

It's extremely painful, but your cornea heals faster than anywhere else on your body. It's important to get it checked out because an infection is easy to get and can cause blindness.

The worst part was having to wear an eye patch for a couple of days. It made driving very interesting. I don't recommend it.

I'm sure that eventually you learn to adapt, but it certainly doesn't happen overnight.

Both times to my "good" eye, the left one.

First time was as a five year old. A friend accidentally stuck her finger in my eye and her fingernail cut my cornea. That turned out to be a good thing since otherwise we would not have known that I have severe astigmatism in my right eye. So I ended up not just wearing the eye patch while the cornea healed but for a month or two longer as they tried to get my brain to use the bad eye after I got glasses.

A few years ago something got in my eye and cut a divot out of the cornea. We never did figure out what happened, but the doctor said there was a little section just scooped out of the surface. All that required were some eye drops to prevent infection and to ease the pain.

I'm glad you got your eye treated. Injured corneas can be serious.

I immediately get huge blisters on my eyeball. Just my eye, not anywhere else. Weirdest looking thing.

My eye is feeling MUCH better, which, needless to say, is quite a relief. Yes, when I went to the clinic about 36 hours after it happened, the doctor said it was starting to get infected so you can say I went there in the "nick" of time! Eyedrops every four hours I applied dilligently plus pain pills that didn't really help so I only took two. Yesterday morning felt good, still sensitive to light so wearing sunglasses everywhere...today even better but my left eye(yes my "good eye" too) still sensitive to touch. Hopefully in a week I'll be back to normal!

I had an abraded cornea once (from a scratched contact lens), and oh holy hell, did that hurt! It healed up within a couple of days, but I had to just go to bed and keep my eyes closed because I couldn't even blink. Good thing eyeballs heal quickly.
