I have a cell phone.
I do one thing with it.
Make telephone calls.
This is my phone, actual size:
I don't text, play games, or surf the Internet with my phone.

(16,646 posts)I saw some statistic the other day that you are basically the "norm". The smart phone users are a small portion of the over all world market. Even more so, the tablet/pad crowd isn't heavy into the cell based connectivity and chooses to wait for WiFi networks to become available.
That said, it is becoming harder to ignore the information available to a traveler with a smart phone. But if you don't travel in "strange" environs, the advantages quickly fade away.

(31,513 posts)I do see an upgrade in my future, however. My kids hardly talk on their phones anymore. They keep in touch by texting. I guess I need to get with the program if I'm going to be in the loop.

(10,622 posts)I don't want to pay the minimum $15 a month data charge for a smart phone. That is $180 a year. And when am I ever more than three feet from one of my computers anyway?
And you know what those fancy smart phones can't do? Work in the sunlight.
When I'm working (or hiking or bicycling) outside, and I need to make a call, if the sun is bright I can't even see the touchscreen on a smartphone. It's basically useless to me until I can find shade.
Every article I see tells me that all phones will soon be smart phones, but I think this is yet another product that most people do not really need.
Oh well, at least you can play Angry Birds. (If you're indoors)

(5,917 posts)cell phones are poisonous to the environment and your body. they are also an enormous rip off.the iphone provides the maker hundreds of dollars in profit per phone and provides the worker a net around the building so when the worker jumps off the roof in an attempt to kill themselves over the working conditions the net will catch them. to no one specific but i know it will show up so please spare me list of companies that usually follows post like this.

(20,277 posts)I really don't see the need for zillions of apps. Or paying $500 bucks for a phone, or a phone bill every month. I do like the option to text.

(32,078 posts)I mostly use a land line. I have a cell phone that I only use for emergencies. I think what I have is considered a "smart phone", as I can get Internet access with it. I don't, however.

(17,671 posts)a smart phone actually saves me money. There's no cable access where I live so I just use the phone for internet at home.

(18,219 posts)I have yet to go down that road at all----although the longer I go, the more complicated it seems they become, and the harder it will be for me to adapt. Oh well. My land line works just fine.

(34,133 posts)Mine's an older basic model Nokia. Tracfone forced it on me when the cell system upgraded and my older basic model Nokia no longer worked.
I make calls when I have an emergency on the road or need to hook up with hubby in town. I have no clue how to pick up voice mail or text with it. There is no incentive for me to do much with it - I can't get a signal inside my house or at most places on the farm, so there is no reason for me to try to use it more.
I use it so little I never can remember my cell number.
The one fancy thing I wish I could do is have customized ring tones. Right now I can chose to have a ring, vibration, or silence. Big whoop.

(130,825 posts)do you have kids, teens/young adults, who live in cities/towns away from you? If you did, chances are you WOULD text!

(2,682 posts)The family (except me) and the house guests sat in the living room playing games with each other ON THEIR PHONES. They were right there in person, we have a number of card and board games that could be played, but they were all on their phones. Since I was the only one without a phone with all the whistles and bells, I was left out.
While I'm bitching, here's another one: When I'm trying to talk with one of the family members, he/she is on the phone texting, game playing or browsing. I'm about to implement a new policy -- I won't talk with them while they are on the phone. Of course that could mean we could go days without speaking to each other, but then I doubt they would notice.

(28,394 posts)I only keep it for emergencies. I don't even know my own phone number! My SO programmed in the emergency numbers (home, work, kids) so I have them in the contacts list.
