I hope this is the right place to post this - I stumbled on this resource while reading another article - it not only individually lists over 500 movies you can see free online (with a link for each one!) but has categories from drama, comedy, westerns, to documentaries (they even have that doc made of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in the bed-in protests) and a slew of silent films.
For me, I was pleased to find their additional resources, including a link to an Australian film site which houses tons of Aussie films. . .http://aso.gov.au/ - anyhow, if you are a serious film buff, this really is worth a look:

Some films seem to be on youtube, others at different video sites and/or independent sources, but apparently they are considered public domain now. A lot of them are older (30's, 40's, 50's) but not exclusively so - but I like a lot of those films anyway. It certainly can be a source of entertainment/education if you don't have Netflix/Hulu (well, and even if you do, this includes a lot of films not found on those sites).
