My male kitty had blocked urinary

He finally came home with me this morning after staying at the vet for 3 nights.

Does anyone here have an experience with a blocked kitty? I did googling ... many times they will have it again so I am watching him close. I got lucky that the total amount for his 3 night stay, catherized, medication, etc. came to $322.00 including 4 cans of c/d which he will have to eat for rest of his life says his vet. I was terrified that it'd cost me between $800.00 and $2,000 according to other people for treatments of their blocked cats. Whew! I only get SSDI. A kind neighbor gave me 100.00 to help out so I will be ok.

My kitty boy's name is Thor, is 3 years old. He and his 2 siblings were born during thunderstorm so that's why his name is Thor after God of Thunder. Very affectionate. Here's a picture of him when he was 4 months old. He's 3 years old now.

Yes, it's really Thor. I created it via icanhazcheeseburger site.

My memory is pretty dim about this, but I believe that did happen to one of my cats years ago. The vet changed his diet and he was okay from then on, but I had to watch for any signs of it. It can be dangerous, for sure.

One had struvite crystals, which were treated with medication and subcutaneous fluids very inexpensively. Afterward I did feed him special food and he never had the problem again.

Another one had stones in his bladder, and required surgery. When they did the ultrasound and bloodwork, they also discovered his liver was failing due to a congenital structural problem. He had surgery to repair his liver and bladder (which was also structurally deformed), and remove the stones, was in the hospital almost 2 weeks, and it cost almost $7000. He was very young and the prognosis for recovery was good so I went ahead with the treatment even though it was a lot of money. It has been over a year since then, and he has never been healthier or happier.

The treatment depends on what caused the problem - I would follow the advice of your vet and definitely keep an eye on his litterbox so if it happens again you can get him treated right away.

I am glad you caught it in time - my understanding is that cats can die pretty quickly if a urinary blockage isn't treated quickly. I feel very fortunate that I noticed my guys were having trouble soon enough to get help from the vets.

Your little Thor is really adorable.

I discovered that there is nothing to guarantee that it won't happen again. My poor baby got blocked up again and I quickly discovered that it can become pretty expensive if it becomes a recurring problem. There is a surgery that can be done that ends up having a male cat pee more like a girl cat. I wish that I had arranged for the surgery for Lester sooner. Once he had the surgery, he never had anymore problems.

Best wishes to Thor and his recovery. I hope that he doesn't go through any additional blockages.

We think it was food-related; the vet said no guarantees it won't happen again, but so far so good - he is now on Science Diet adult indoor, and had been trouble free for over a year.

Scary stuff, and dangerous....here's hoping Thor remains healthy and happy for a full, wonderful life!

that he didn't have too many dry treats (because that is what I had given him too much of when he got blocked). He never had a problem again. My brother's cat had the same thing. Cat didn't get to the vet in time because my brother was out of town and the cat died.

It sucks when our cats are ill. I am glad to hear that your neighbor helped. Thor is a cutie. Best wishes for his continued good health.

Vet said the 9 lives was no good for him. Changed his diet and it did not happen again.

He's peeing in quarter size, seems to be back to his old self, he slept on my lap today for approx. 2 hours.

He doesn't like c/d food. I will call his vet in the morning to see if they have another one like Science Diet rather than Hills. Did your cat like c/d food? Thor normally is a big eater before he got blocked, I'd think he'd love this c/d food. I put some in this mouth as gentle as possible and he got it down. There's water fountain for him.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with a blocked cat. I know it's no fun! I am watching him closely.
