(20,277 posts)I like the music they added.
Yup, I was rooting for the rooster.

(72,300 posts)I was out on the road for the past two days.
I need DU to return to sanity before I hurt somebody.

(14,120 posts)I had an Aunt on my fathers side that raised chickens. She had the meanest Roster ever. Many a cat around her farm carried scars and disabilities due to him.
So the Cat taking for cover was a good move!

(72,300 posts)The spurs on a rooster's legs are quite the weapon. He chased all of the kids.

(72,300 posts)That was no common cock. His feathers were fluffy instead of laying smoothly against his body.

(6,787 posts)I love cats. I'm not all that fond of chickens. My parents raised some when I was little.
They were smelly and stupid. (The chickens, not my parents!)
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I sort already guessed you were describing chickens.
When I was 17, I vacationed on a chicken farm gathering eggs, weighing and candling 'em.
Chickens are a trip.

(17,621 posts)I forgot about them having spurs. No wonder the cat ran!

(72,300 posts)And cute when they are running after anything that's not me.

(8,217 posts)I feel bad for the guy getting a ticket.
That is an extra 10-15 minutes stuck there stewing.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I'll waste more time getting the ticket than if I drive almost the legal limit.

(8,217 posts)You mentioned a meeting somewhere in the East Coast at some point in the summer.
Is that still happening?

(46,179 posts)That's the most likely outcome of any confrontation between cat and rooster. That beak, those claws and spurs, those powerful wings...they can deliver some damage.
My cats have never stalked my free-range chickens. They share space, ignoring each other.
The only time I've seen a cat stalk the chickens is when there are young chicks. They still won't get very close, though, as an angry hen defending her chicks is just as intimidating as a rooster.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)The cats in my first video were minding their own business until the rooster went on the attack.
Mother animals usually do defend their young.
LWolf
(46,179 posts)that's because, when they're not, they are destined for the soup pot. Since they free-range, there is simply no room for a bully.
Not having more than one at a time helps.
Liza...isn't she part of the Natural History of the Chicken video? I haven't watched it in years, but I remember her.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I don't know about Lisa. However ~ I do think the Silkies are adorable.
No, there isn't any room for excess or nasty roosters on a farm.
Approximately how many roosters do you have ?
LWolf
(46,179 posts)The current rooster, "Handsome," (because he knows he is, lol,) is an orpington easter-egger cross, the grandson of the very dignified, gentleman buff orpington who lived his full life out there with the flock. He hatched out of a green egg like the one in your chick video, set by a black australorp hen.
Handsome's dad, "Junior," was given to someone who wanted a gentle rooster shortly after he hatched out.
I posted some pics of various members of the flock years back in an older version of DU, over at the "rural" group. Here's an old picture of grandpa, in his younger years:
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)How old is grandpa now?
LWolf
(46,179 posts)I'd post a pic of his grandson, but I haven't thought to take one. I've sort of figured out how to get photos off of my phone, but not in any user-friendly way.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I haven't even tried to move photos off my phone except by text to another phone.
LWolf
(46,179 posts)I used to take lots of pictures, until cameras went digital. My first, and only, digital camera developed a glitch; it stopped uploading pics to the 'puter when I plugged it in. It's still sitting here, 5 years since the last time I was able to get it to work. I've figured out how to email pics from my phone to myself, one picture at a time. It's slow, so I've got a big back load of pics that just sit there.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I fought the switch to digital but I was paying a small fortune for developing and printing.
I have a Canon ESO 20D. It's fun. I had more freedom with my old Canon before this digital one.
I was unaware that rooster could live so long.
LWolf
(46,179 posts)It wasn't that great to begin with.
Meanwhile, I've got a student that takes better pictures than I do; he did a fund-raiser selling his photos last year.

(72,300 posts)You have the group with the raging hormones to guide on the correct pathway.
Brain research tells us that their brains, at that age, are going through the same pruning and development process that toddlers do, which results in the "terrible twos."
I've got large numbers of "terrible twos" all day, except that many are bigger than I am and they also have raging hormones.
Someone has to care about them during this most difficult life stage. It might as well be me.
I am glad, though, that it's summer.

I've never had any children of my own (my choice) but I do love them.
