Next Terminator Film A Reboot, Planned As First In New Trilogy

Though they’re apparently keeping Arnold Schwarzenegger, a new press release from Paramount explicitly calls the next Terminator film a reboot, and a reboot called Terminator no less. With no The.

A reboot In the Star Trek sense, maybe, where a bit of time travel can rewire the continuity? Seems like a perfect opportunity, and perhaps a way to explain the persistance of Arnie.

The press release also tells us that this new film will be the first part in a “stand-alone trilogy.” There’s just time to get three films done and out, I suppose, before copyright laws mean the rights revert to James Cameron in 2019 and he, I dunno, puts them on the mantelpiece or something, never to be used again.

We can look forward to the new reboot, produced by AnnaPurna pictures and distributed by Paramount on June 2016 2015.

Apparently when the endless sequels written by make-it-up-as-you-go script writing hacks gets the time and storylines hopelessly muddled and self-contradictory, the referee blows the whistle and it's time to start from scratch again and do a reboot. Got it.

The original Terminator was brilliant, the sequel pretty good, though a bit too mawkishly sentimental for my tastes, and the third was so bad I didn't even bother with the fourth. The TV series started off decent, but hopelessly jumped the shark early on. Why didn't the entire population of the future simply move back in time if it was so easy? Why didn't the machines send back thousands of terminators if the channel was still open? Time travel stories can be fascinating if done carefully (e.g. 12 monkeys), but it usually becomes a hopeless mess if used without care.

I won't be bothering with this reboot.
