Mulberries. Tis the season for purple hands and sidewalks.

I guess you either love them or hate them. An extraordinarily prolific tree, they are loaded with sweet, juicy, extremely messy fruit right now. Commercially ignored since it is very fragile and perishable.

Makes awesome pies, jam, muffins, though.

I lived with mulberry trees for many years. I've got pictures of me holding my 1 yo son up to pick berries and eat them, all purple-faced. He's 35 now.

Yes, they were messy, and so were the birds who came in to clean up the mess. I still enjoyed them.

... and others have bland, tasteless fruit. A few have insipidly sweet fruit that I consider inedible.

It's an adventure. I've never had my own tree, so I've never picked enough to make something with.

The one in back by the driveway is female (mulberry trees are diecious) so there are squished mulberries all over the driveway. The others are male, but they all grow fast and I'm constantly cutting down seedlings.
