You think MFM was a bad pilot? Look at his engineering. (Original Post) Ptah Jan 2012 OP
Note to MFM: do not turn the train left unless the tracks go that way. Capn Sunshine Jan 2012 #1

Maybe he was going too straight on straight track out in the middle of East Bumfuck. That's just weird.

How are you supposed to know he was out all night chasing some sweet little caboose?

It might not have been MFM's fault, ( ) since there are many causes of derailments. Flangeless wheels make it easier for the train to follow curves in the track, but they also make it easier for the train to come off the track.

Mr. froggy was a BNSF locomotive engineer for many years. Here's a picture of one of his derailments in Wyoming. The train was going about 30 mph. A rockslide was the culprit...or should I say, a big boulder from the slide that struck the locomotive. No serious injuries. (The only time Mr. froggy was ever injured at work was when he was flagging traffic at a crossing and a guy in a sportscar decided to ignore him - and ran over him. He had tire marks on his legs for weeks and limped for a while, but he had no broken bones.)

What a wreck, glad everyone was OK. Interesting story and pic. I am also surprised that Mr. froggy survived getting run over with just some tire marks to show for it. Stupid sports car.

was never found. None of the train crew got the car's license number.

Nowadays I think someone might have thought to photograph the tread marks and use the patterns to try to ID the car, but no suspect was developed, so it probably wouldn't have helped anyway.

Yes, stupid sports car.

here on Teh Intertubes. I'll see an interesting engine on the CSX line across the street or track down where the AMTRAK engine had been before it came through.
Some of those numbers get reported several times a week.
