Phil Collins

Though we might hate to admit it
There are always two sides to every story

Find yourself in the gutter in a lonely part of town
Where death waits in the darkness
With a weapon to cut some stranger down

Sleeping with an empty bottle
He's a sad and an empty hearted man
All he needs is a job and a little respect
So he can get out while he can

We always need to hear both sides of the story

A neighborhood peace is shattered
It's the middle of the night young faces hide in the shadows
While they watch their mother and father fight

He says she's been unfaithful
She says her love for him has gone
And the brother shrugs to his sister and says
"Looks like it's just us from now on"

We always need to hear both sides of the story

And the lights are all on, the world is watching now
People looking for truth, we must not fail them now
Be sure, before we close our eyes
Don't walk away from here till you hear both sides

Here we are all gathered in what seems
To be the center of the storm
Neighbors once friendly now stand each side
Of the line that has been drawn

They've been fighting here for years
But now there's killing on the streets
While small coffins are lined up sadly
Now united in defeat

We always need to hear both sides of the story

And the lights are all on, the world is watching now
People looking for truth, we must not fail them now
Be sure, before we close our eyes
Don't walk away from here till you see both sides

White man turns the corner
Finds himself within a different world
Ghetto kid grabs his shoulder
Throws him up against the wall

He says, "Would you respect me
If I didn't have this gun
'Cos without it, I don't get it
And that's why I carry one"

We always need to hear both sides of the story

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord?
Oh Lord

Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am

Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord

Well, I remember, I remember, don't worry
How could I ever forget?
It's the first time, the last time
We ever met

But I know the reason why you keep your silence
No, you don't fool me
Well, the hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord

I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord

Lately I have 5 or 6 hours of driving time to myself so I'm revisiting my older CDs.

Very atmospheric.

But I never could figure out what it was he felt that was in the air. It stopped making sense for me, and my enjoyment of the song cratered.

7. I enjoyed the sound of the song without understanding it's meaning.

When I first heard it, I thought of fear and a need for self defense. The original version stated ... "there's a gun and ammunition by the door".

Just chill outside with that playing, but your ear buds slightly out so that you hear the bugs too. Ahhh...

5. He wrote and sang that for a man in the front row.

He was witness to the guy commiting murder. It was an "in your face" moment. Phil can't drum anymore (botched spinal operation). He can still sing.

6. There are many urban legends about this song. Phil asserts none are true.

The drowning story is a rumor - an American one, apparently
Collins said that he is amused at the American "urban legend" that resulted from this song. It had nothing at all to do with drowning. (or murder, or adultery or boating or any other thing) He said, although he really didn't write it with anything in particular in mind, he was dealing with a recent divorce. He was angry. The drowning reference is obviously anger - "well, if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand". That is just referring to the explanation of how angry he is - he hates the person so much that he would ignore pleas for help. He did state that he had no specific event of any kind when he wrote this song.
