A sad turn of events....Mini-vibes needed.

My hamster escaped his cage last night and is missing. I sent the dogs in there to sniff him out but they just looked worried and confused. I just set a Havahart trap--- that was confounding and frustrating as hell! First it wouldn't spring shut and then it sprung every time I looked at it!

All tiny little hamster-sized vibes are requested. Thanks very much.

Dammit.... the curse of 2013 continues!

Not sure. I figure he is hiding out somewhere during the daytime and will come out tonight looking for a snack. At least I hope so.

I have faith that you'll recapture him when the sun goes down.
Is he tame enough to come to you when you offer treats?

That happened to me once... I found her hiding in the crack behind the sofa cushion. (That was fortunately during a brief interlude when I had no cats in my home.)

I'm so sorry - I hope you find him. If he gets thirsty, he'll come out looking for water, won't he? And food...

I had good luck catching him with a simple bucket trap. Just basically like this with little treats that go up the ramp (peanut butter on lettuce is good.)

It was the Havahart trap that caught him though. He didn't seem to investigate the bucket trap. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I had a little gerbil once that I used to let out in the mornings for play time. He would come when I called him, and would run up and poke me in the ankles while I was getting ready to go to work. He escaped his cage one day while I was at work; we lived in a house that had long ago been converted to apartments, and he ended up inside a neighbor's walls. It did not end well

I hope your guy makes it back safely. It's very likely that he's holed up and sleeping someplace, and will come out at night looking for food.

... a VERY stern no-nonsense, no-ifs-ands-or-buts-about-it directive of, "NO LIVE ANIMALS
OF ANY KIND WILL BE GIVEN AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT!!!!", I simply could NOT resist buying
that cute little gerbil for my little brother (I had never seen one before).
.
She was quite the little escape artist. We would frantically search EVERYWHERE without any
luck. We'd usually catch her when our collie Sandy would spot her in the open and start
barking at her frantically from several feet away... quite the badass until the gerbil would
move the slightest bit towards her.
.
Then and only then would Sandy STFU and proceed to pee herself (on the other hand, she
was the sweetest dog in the world).
.
I bet that gerbil wished that she had a buddy so she could call him over and say, "Watch
me make that dog pee herself."
.
We'd ALWAYS catch her, though.
.
Eventually.
.
.
.
Take heart in this, femmocrat... sometimes it was VERY eventually.
.
But ALWAYS.

I wish Sandy was still around. My dogs acted like total dunces. The youngest one did find a little pile of hamster poo though, so that is a start!

My old Golden retriever was wonderful about locating mice in the house. But then he was a retriever!

Thank you for all the good vibes! The Havahart trap worked! The hamster was lured in and is now safely returned to his cage!

I checked last night at midnight and still no sign of him. But my husband found him at 6:00 this morning! He ran straight for the water bottle! LOL

He is now holed up in his house with a half-eaten strawberry. What a huge relief.... I was even dreaming about hamsters! Funny how we can get so attached to such ungrateful little critters who only want to escape.

S to all who were concerned! Thank you, Loungers!

When we discovered that he was missing, we took the dogs into that room to sniff him out. One of the dogs located a little pile of hamster poop in the corner behind door of the bookcase. That is where I set the trap and it's where we found him. Fortunately, he didn't travel very far! His cage sits on top of that same bookcase so he must have been hiding behind it!

Thanks for asking.
