Xavier was the runt of 7 black kittens born on Friday 13th. He was 18 years old. He had a stroke and we had to put him to sleep yesterday. I wanted to share a few pictures of my sweet baby boy.
We started out with three cats. Xavier is on the bottom stair and his brother, Duma, is on the top. Duma died 2 years ago from cancer. He was 13.
This is Maggie, our last surviving cat, snuggling with Xavier.
This is me holding Xavier. He was a very affectionate cat and loved to be held
This is my husband, (DUer AllenVanAllen) holding Xavier.
Xavier was almost deaf. Last week, someone posted a video of a cat purring (I forgot who it was, but thank you!) I put the speaker next to him and he reached out to touch it. He could hear it a little bit:
This is Maggie. She's 14. She's a very sweet and loving kitty. She misses her big brothers:
I'm very thankful that Xavier was healthy for over 18 years and his suffering was short. Right now, it's hard to stop crying. My heart is just broken. I miss my sweet boy.

(2,015 posts)I lost my boy Cali about a year ago to a stroke, I understand the crying. Xavier was gorgeous as is Maggie. Hopefully you and Maggie can ease the pain for each other as you grieve your handsome boy.

(3,709 posts)Xavier and Duma remind me of my black cats, K.C (Kool Cat...he had a little goatee from birth) and Uhura (yes...after my favorite communications officer). They were beauties like your boys, and I was fortunate enough to have them until 18 and 20. So hard to lose them but try to keep the good memories close to your heart.
Hugs to Maggie and to you.

(3,134 posts)When he was a tiny kitten small enough to hold in the palm of my hands while he slept waiting for his first vet visit I marveled at how big his ears were! He actually grew into them. You can kind of tell their size here as he's licking his brother Sebastian. He loved his big brother. Sebastian was 15 when died Xavier was three and he was never the same after that. It was like his kitten-hood was over. He became so serious after that. I wish we had better pictures of Xavier when he was a kitten. Those were the days before access to good and affordable digital cameras so not many big-eared kitten pictures. I love my little X and I Will always miss him so.

(3,691 posts)All three of my black kitties have been so sweet and I've heard that they are the least likely to be adopted at shelters. That tells me that I'll have to adopt another one in the future

(13,661 posts)Xavier loved and knew he was loved back. That's the best of all worlds, and I'm sure he's missing you too but he's someplace peaceful where he can now hear the birds sing
4 years on, I can still barely think of my Tommy without tears welling up. It never totally goes away, but the keen closeness of the sorrow does fade.

Maggie will be so lonely. She no longer has her big brothers to snooze with during the day and no longer has anyone left to lick her ears clean.
