a couple months ago - we were in Oviedo to get a mirror framed at a little shop and I saw the chickens in the parking lot just wandering around like they owned the place. My wife said "They do! You never heard of the Oviedo chickens?!" ANd I had to admit I had not - even though I worked in Oviedo for a year a while back.

Downtown's Wild Chickens
The town of Oviedo in central Florida has a fairly large (30+) breeding populaton of wild chickens nesting and generally milling about in the downtown area. The local merchants feed them, and some sell t-shirts celebrating the chickens. ("Crazy about chickens" and "Poultry in Motion" are two local favorites.) The chickens have been here for approximately 30 years, and are often seen crossing the main roads in downtown Oviedo, and, I swear this is true, loitering in the drive-thru of the nearby fast food fried chicken restaurant.

That stretch for hundreds of miles from Florida to Virgina. When you get there it's a giant fireworks store, but after hundred of miles everyone needs a cup of coffee and to stretch the legs. I saw a similar campaign in Arizona. Chief yellow horse loves you. went on for maybe a hundred miles. Chief yellow horse was selling local trinkets. I bought some and love chief yellow horse right back.

La Crosse ...

La Crosse, Wisconsin

On the north entry into the river city of La Crosse, the welcome sign is topped with a fiberglass sculpture depicting three Ho-Chunk Indians playing a lively game of Lacrosse. Two braves reach with outstretched tree-branch racquets for the ball, while a third athlete lies at their feet.

Artist Elmer Petersen created the original statue in Cor-Ten steel, and it was erected downtown on Main St in 1980. It was eventually replaced with a bronze casting.

Seattle, Washington

This is a famous landmark south of Seattle, originally part of a cowboy-themed gas station built in 1954 named "Premium Tex." The orange hat, 19 feet tall and 44 feet wide, sheltered the station office; the boots were Cowboys and Cowgirls bathrooms (the slightly smaller one was for the ladies).

Its owners hoped to expand the gas station into a Western-themed shopping center named "Frontier Village," but the effort proved unsuccessful. The gas station closed in 1988, and Hat 'n' Boots sank into a period of decay and vandalism. Skateboarders cracked the brim of the Hat.

they have a deer buck's head mounted high on a wall, and while you're eating, it stares down at you. Creepy.

They once had a large pink pig, about 20 feet tall in the parking lot they own across the street, but some people complained about it, and the NMDOT was trying to make them remove it.

According to this web page, I think the battle to keep the pink pig won.

Most recently called "Motel Inn," opened on Dec. 12, 1925 by Arthur Heineman as "Motor Hotel." By fate or economy (the stories vary) it became the first to squeeze the words into "motel." All that's left is the bell tower and the sign.

Anchorage, Alaska - Outhouse Races - Fur Rendezvous
Every year during a Festival called Fur Rendezvous (or "Fur Rondy&quot , people bring their homemade outhouses that they have decorated in various fashions downtown. One person has to be in the outhouse, and the others either push or pull it through the snow.

They also have snowshoe softball games. The people who are playing softball have to wear snowshoes. They also hold car races at the Fur Rendezvous Festival. The track is downtown, and it is made of ice.

I have pictures of these things. The outhouse races are hilarious.

I don;t live there anymore but it was literally a way we gave direction to the Taconic State parkway:

Giant Prozac Pill

A giant Prozac pill sits on someone's lawn at this intersection right near the Giant fork in the road:

My fork in the road is 31 feet tall at a major crossroad near Rhinebeck, NY. I made it from a 13ft. piece of scrap plate steel (x2) and the top 5-ft was aluminum from my dumpster diving -- complete with a taper (sent by the fork gods). It's been a real hit -- I guess you just don't come to a "fork in the road" that often. Must admit it was the perfect spot.

Ten-Foot-Tall Green Aliens
There's only one road into Carlsbad Caverns and you have to drive right through White's City. If you look to your left as you're driving in you'll see a couple of ten-foot-tall wooden green aliens out in front of the White's City Trading Post. They seem totally out of place but, hey, weird is where you find it.
