UPDATED 8:30 PM EST, January 2, 2014
A major winter storm is spreading snow across much of the Midwest and Northeast today and early Friday, piling up impressive snow amounts in the Northeast. Meanwhile, blowing snow and bitter cold will accompany the storm, an added danger for the New Year`s first winter storm.

Due to the threat for heavy snowfall, Winter Weather Advisories stretch all the way from southern Illinois to western New York and central Pennsylvania. This includes Indianapolis, Detroit, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, N.Y.

Farther east, Winter Storm Warnings cover most of New York, eastern Pennsylvania, northern Delaware, New Jersey, and most of New England. This includes Philadelphia, New York City and Albany, N.Y., Hartford, Conn., Boston and Portland, Maine. A Blizzard Warning has also been issued for Long Island and the coastal New England.

Two weather systems will merge together off the Mid-Atlantic tonight, passing southeast of Cape Cod on Friday morning before moving into the Canadian Maritimes Friday afternoon.

Snow has already fallen in the Midwest. This moderate snow dumped 2 to 4 inches across the Mid-Mississippi Valley and even 4 to 8 inches in some locations north of the Ohio River and into the eastern Great Lakes.

The highest snow amounts from this storm are expected from eastern New York across northern and central New England, with 12 to 18 inches possible from Albany, N.Y., to Boston, and across much of Vermont, New Hampshire and coastal Maine. Some locations north and east of Boston could even see 18 to 22 inches before it all winds down Friday.

The combination of heavy snow and strong winds will result in dangerous wind chills along with blowing and drifting snow, with near-blizzard conditions possible along the coastal areas of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where whiteout conditions will significantly impact travel. Blowing and drifting could also impact Long Island.

Around 12 inches of snow is expected across southern New England into the northern suburbs of New York City. For New York City itself, 4 to 8 inches of snow could accumulate by Friday morning.

Farther south, Philadelphia could see 4 to 6 inches of snow, while the Baltimore-Washington metro area will pick up 2 to 4 inches.

To make matters even worse, blustery northwest winds following the system will usher in a burst of arctic air Friday and Saturday. Highs on Friday will not climb above zero across upstate New York and northern New England, with single digits and low teens found as far south as New York City and northern Pennsylvania. Wind chill values will be even colder on Friday. Saturday morning`s lows will even be below zero in the greater New York City area.

Wind Chill: 0F Monthly Rain: 0.00"

So Far Today
High: 2F Rain: 0.00" Rain Rate: 0.00"/h
Low: 0F Gusts: 29mph N

-27C (-15F) including the windchill. I can't even say how much snow we got, because it was moving so fast, and piling up 3 foot high drifts in places. (Southern Ontario)

She loves to run free. When I brought her to New York we had a large yard. Now the poor thing only goes out for walks on a leash. But she has all the love she wants.

12. Mine's a rescue too.

My friend who does rescue had a neighbor and Marcy was their puppy. They left her locked in a crate all night long in the garage with no attention, training or anything. Maria couldn't take the crying and finally told them to giver her the dog. She brought Marcy to me when she was about 7 months old. She barely reacted to her name. And she was a wild child because of the lack of training. She's better behaved now and thinks the sole purpose of every dog she meets at the park is to play chase with her. She's part lab and something else(who knows) but when she gets near water, she's in it. I've had her for almost two years now.

It is higher than she is period.

But she loves the cold and snow. Me not so much, trying to figure out why man lives in this climate.

5+ inches of snow, drifting to 3 - 4 feet.

Winds 25 - 35 mph

Temp 12; -5 wind chill

Sub zero temps forecast.

TARRYTOWN - The New York State Thruway has now reopened for all vehicles.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered the overnight closure of the thruway south of Albany at midnight due to the winter storm.
"This is nothing to be trifled with," Cuomo said, declaring a state of emergency statewide. "People should seriously consider staying in their homes."

I'm glad you could get out and enjoy it.

I just hate going out in the cold.

Our last home had a two car heated garage. Everything was done at the drive through window except for grocery shopping. One of my cars had a remote start so I wasn't cold for long.

Twenty-five years ago I loved it.

That's not with the wind chill. At least it's not as windy as yesterday. My dogs, after being packed into their coats, actually managed a "normal" length walk this morning. It was worth it - the lake looks amazing this morning: the sun is shining and there's mist rising among chunks of snow and ice.

Should have been done decades ago. We could take an old oil line and insert a new pipe in it...

The truly bizarre thing is that, although Jerry Brown declared drought emergency, our local water suppliers have been mute -- no requests for conservation, etc. I don't think the last restrictions and 20% reductions were ever lifted.

They are flocking to my ground level water dish that was a mild heater in it.

No other open water around, even though I suppose they could eat snow, although I'm not sure some birds are set up to do that with their strange holding the head up to swallow water.

Nine degrees out, tonight hits -5. RI.

The first major winter storm of 2014 is departing eastern New England this morning, leaving a swath of heavy snow in its wake. Blistering cold weather is pouring in behind the storm from the Upper Mississippi Valley to the Northeast, producing dangerous wind chills.

The western snow edge is now along the populated Interstate 95 corridor from northern New Jersey to eastern Maine. The hardest hit by the storm is Massachusetts where the storm dumped 23.5 inches in Boxford. Other snow totals range from 16.7 inches in Libertyville, Ill., to 2.1 inches in Alexandria, Va.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect from eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey north into eastern Maine, including Philadelphia, New York City, Boston and Hartford, Conn.

Blizzard Warnings continue on Long Island, N.Y., and for eastern Massachusetts east of Boston. In these locations, snow and blowing snow will reduce visibility to a quarter-mile or less through late-morning.

Another 1 to 3 inches will coat eastern New England and New Jersey this morning with less than one inch expected along Interstate 95 from New York City to Philadelphia.

An Arctic high pressure is building into the Great Lakes and strong low pressure departing the Northeast Coast, allowing the coldest temperatures this season to usher into the East. Wind chills range from minus-35 degrees in northern Maine to minus-30 degrees in the Upper Mississippi Valley. Even wind chills in the Mid-Atlantic have dipped a few degrees below zero.

Wind Chill Warnings and Wind Chill Advisories stretch from Maine into the Mid-Atlantic and west through the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest. This includes Minneapolis, Hartford, Conn., Boston, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Milwaukee.

Wind chills will drop to minus-45 degrees in far northern New England and Minnesota to minus-10 degrees in the interior Mid-Atlantic west of the Washington and Baltimore suburbs.

Snow will quickly exit the Northeast this morning, allowing road crews and residents to dig out of the heavy snow that has fallen. However, blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibility significantly and make for difficult travel even after the snow ends.

The winter storm is responsible for producing a few daily snow records on Thursday. Boston had 10.6 inches of accumulation, breaking the long-standing record of 8 inches set on January 2, 1904. Meanwhile, Cincinnati had a record 4.2 inches on Thursday.

That's the actual temperature nevermind the wind chill factor.

I'll bet there is more that didn't make the early broadcast. We are 100 miles north of NYC so our local news is nonexistent except for a local shooting at the DEP on Monday.

How are the penguins doing today?

The snow on my deck is almost up to the seats of the chairs. Don't think I'll take my coffee out there this morning.

96. if you take your coffee out there this morning.....

take along an ice-pick, you'll need it.

The penguins are smiling today! It's -2 deg. this morning, and yesterday we got 8 inches of snow! We have a drift around a spruce tree that's up to my thighs (I had to try to wade thru it earlier this a.m. to take a letter out to the mailbox, where it probably won't get picked up today like I need it to....) Wind chill in KC is -17--it's a LOVELY day to be a penguin! Fortunately, I don't have to work today (obviously--I'm on DU, right?) My crew worked Monday, trying to plant a tree; the ground was so hard (frozen) that they'd swing a pick-ax at the ground, and it would bounce! solid as concrete! I think we're done working for this week--high for the rest of the week is 12 degrees, so no thawing in sight.

Stay Warm!!

85. It's a topsy-turvy world

My mom says that there's a ton of snow in Northwest Arkansas. It's like the 3rd big snow there this winter. When I was 10 years old, I received a sled for Christmas. From then until the time I was a senior in high school, I was only able to use that sled during 2 or 3 snows. Now it seems like the area gets multiple snows every winter.

In Glens Falls so I got the foot or so of snow and the temperature right now is -21 according to my phone.

I still had to venture out to work in the storm but I put off stopping at the store, the kitties still had some food in their dish so we were safe.

Have to make myself get out of the car to get more cat food tonight because it sets off a mini cat panic if the back of the self feeder isn't full as well as their dish. Meanwhile the two furry tyrants are safe at home with their fleecy blankets they got for Christmas.

I think probably at least 6-7 inches and its coming down really heavy right now. I was out in it already this morning to get to my part time job and the roads were pretty bad then, really not looking forward to going to my real job tonight. I usually go in around 4:30-5 but I'm staying put in my nice warm apartment until it at least slows down a little.

Almost impossible when other cars are sliding about.

It's a warmer storm this time, 27 degrees outside at this moment. That makes for heaver, wetter snow. This storm is just starting for us.

It's 16 degrees today, and it's been foggy the past couple of mornings so the trees are frosty. It's beautiful -- now if we'd just get some snow, everything would be perfect.

In Alaska January was the fourth warmest on record.

86. When you have to stamp out an area for a big dog to do a poopy squat in

then it's a LOT... as in WAY too much.

This crap was less of it but worse than last week in that last week it was light fluffy stuff you couldn't make a snowball with whereas this time it's soggy and heavy as hell... you can barely lift a shovelful. And now we're supposed to get more crap piled on top of this tomorrow or the next day. Once again, my week is fucked.

At least we aren't in zero temps anymore and the nasty winds have finally gone missing. This time it's way more slippery though.

I'm sick to death of this, but the dog is having the time of his life.

The snow was up to her chin. She's a smart chocolate lab. She quickly did what she was begging to go out for, turned, looked at me, carefully walked up the stairs ... poor thing. If I could let her off the leash she would have a wonderful time.

When the sun comes up today ... I'll post snow photos taken yesterday and ones from this morning for comparison. The snow plow just made 4 passes down my road clearing the snow. It's really that deep.
