(6,154 posts)The best headphones on the market require a powered amp. They offer too much resistance for most run of the mill computer sound cards to drive properly. There are an increasing number of sound cards with built in headphone amps now though.

(13,409 posts)Make sure that all appropriate levels (speakers, system sounds, etc.) are turned up to the appropriate level. And, as the poster above me suggested, give VLC a try. Even if it doesn't solve your output issue, it's still a damned fine piece of software.
