National Rocky Road Day
Today is National Rocky Road Day! Rocky road ice cream is a delicious dessert with an interesting culinary history. In 1929 after the stock market crash, a man named William Dreyer (the founder of Dreyer Ice Cream) calmed his Black Thursday nerves by creating the original rocky road. He mixed chunky almonds, mini marshmallows, and delicious milk chocolate ice cream to create a new ice cream flavor that would make people smile despite the tough economic times. It instantly became an American favorite and soon became popular all over the world.
Did you know that in Australia, people add jam to their rocky road ice cream? And in the United Kingdom, they add cherries and raisins! Celebrate National Rocky Road Day with a delicious rocky road ice cream sundae. Yum!

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine holds Mosquito Day celebrations every year, including events such as parties and exhibitions, a tradition dating back to as early as the 1930s.[2]
And to think I've been missing these parties for decades!

Everyone wanted to know "who was she named after?" Herself was the answer. So what crazy holiday falls on her birthday???...National Joe Day!!!

(13,877 posts)Many, many evenings spent playing bridge and heavily indulging in Bridge Mix chocolates. Found something that fits me.
On the down side, it's the halfway mark between the excesses of Christmas...presents all gone, everybody is broke, tinsel is straggling down, tree is browning, underneath empty except for the dead needles and a couple of presents way back under...they state "wait for birthday". No one feels like a party or much of anything ... still stuffed and eating leftovers. Then after that it seems to be the signal for everybody to get ready for New Year's Eve Party/Day. No Happy Birthday Cupcakes to hand out at school, either...on school break.

(14,914 posts)I never heard of it, so I looked it up and it is supposed to be a day of gratitude for not being homeless. I am all for gratitude for the things we tend to take for granted, so that sounds fine to me. There don't seem to be any particular traditions associated with the day. This website gave a recipe for a pumpkin crunch cake, which sounds good and heaven knows there is plenty of pumpkin on the market right after Thanksgiving.

I'm not sure there is any other obvious connection between having a roof over your head and pumpkin, unless you are Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater.
