I was buying a new guitar and one of the guys behind the counter put on Queensryche, which I only knew because he told me when I asked 'what is that crap you've got on?' I've never liked metal and agree with what someone said about the genre, which is that it's the cockroach of musical genres, and when everything else has died out, it'll still be there unchanged and trudging along for centuries to come

23. I find I enjoy 80s New Wave
Fri Jan 17, 2014, 02:33 PM
Jan 2014

far more now than when I was in the 80s. Back then I was too wrapped up in going along with the herd (in my case it was a metal herd) and wasn't mature enough to buck the trend.

Please note that I am NOT saying if someone hated New Wave in the 80s it was only because they were not mature. I'm saying that's why I didn't listen to it.

Metal is still my favorite genre but I'm glad I'm catching up on all the stuff I missed back then for being too pig-headed.

But I still think Thrash metal saved 80s music. Metallica (before Lars assholed up the joint), Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus, Possessed, Death, Napalm Death, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Atheist, and tons more gave us something different than standard MTV fare. I guess I shouldn't say "saved" as I am now finding there was great non-metal in the 80s. But it was what we listened to while everyone else was listening to bad pop music. But pop music has been lousy for every generation - until they get older and find some of it was pretty good lol.

If I may be cranky old man for a second though: Even though 80's was heavy with synth and keys (two things most metal heads did not appreciate) at least those guys ACTUALLY PLAYED AND WROTE THEIR OWN SHIT! mostly. You may have thought Kajagoogoo was too lame for being Too Shy Shy but check out Nick Beggs on bass - that dude can play. I know because I saw him tear up the Chapman Stick as part of John Paul Jones' solo band. I'd like to see One Direction do anything remotely as talented as Nick Beggs taking a shit.

I was lucky enough to see the Pixies a couple summers ago - fantastic band. Sad that I will never get to see all of the Cars.

Really! It got people back on the dance floor and re-engaged to music. It gave "rock music" something to hate so they decided to hang on for a little while longer. Not that I don't appreciate what some old rockers like Neil Young are doing politically, I have a hard time listening to 80's music.

To be honest, I find grey ponytails strutting around a stage to be strangely off-putting.

A lot of rock-n-roll's appeal for a lot of people was the communication
of unbridled youthful male cockiness, which just doesn't work in senior citizen years
for a lot of reasons. I was always more into listening than watching, so I don't care.

Replacements, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, early R.E.M., Concrete Blonde, Dinosaur Jr, Minutemen, Big Black, Black Flag, barely scratches the surface of awesome 80's alt-rock. Especially if you read Michael Azerrad's book 'Our Band Could Be Your Life,' there's really a whole goldmine there.

The early 80s were great also. While droolers were listening to the hair band crap, my friends were listening to Joy Division, Cocteau Twins, Gang of Four, Talking Heads, Wire, The Stranglers, The Police, The Cure, Wall of Voodoo and the zillion other acts that broke the mold and dared to do something different, interesting and exciting.

Now the 00s, they just suck altogether

..... I know you are right. But I haven't discovered a truly compelling artist since Boards of Canada 12 years ago. Probably because I am getting old and also because I have more success finding stuff from the 70s 80s and 90s that I overlooked the first time.

There is some pretty good stuff like ratatat or maybe lcd soundsystem but not the OMG stuff I look for And come on, very little on my list ever got in the top 40, very little worth listening to ever does any more, unlike the 60s and 70s where the actual cream rose to the top not the manufactured dreck!
