The Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks combined for 10 fighting majors, eight game misconducts and 152 penalty minutes when a brawl broke out two seconds into their game Saturday night.

Each team started its fourth line, and the players paired off as soon as the puck dropped. All 10 skaters were assessed major penalties for fighting and eight were ejected. Calgary's Brian McGrattan and Vancouver's Tom Sestito received 10-minute misconducts.

I can't think the league or Brendan Shanahan as the Vice President of Hockey and Business Development and Director of Player Safety for the NHL (and the NHL's chief disciplinarian) is terribly happy with them for starting their enforcers for the purpose of having a melee on the opening puck drop.

Something tells me there are several multi-game Shanabans coming.

That was ridiculous. I'm not enamored with Shanahan, and I hope he does a better job with this than he's did with all the suspensions for cheap shots that were so prevalent at the beginning of the season. Way too many of them got of easy.

Hartley got a $25,000 fine. The difference in sanctions was due to Tortorella trying to barge into the Flames locker room between periods and instigating a physical altercation with Flames asst. coach Clint Malarchuk.

They gave away two points to the Kings last week in some kind of "show of toughness" that pretty much got them laughed off the ice. (The Kings captain fought their goon while the Sedins sat on the bench.)

He's trying to rally the troops, I guess. But it ain't gonna work. It's the fucking Canucks!
