(37,990 posts)Amazon Prime = free shipping on Amazon-purchased products plus streaming of films in the Amazon catalog - which is comparable to Netflix's streaming selections.
So, IMHO, at $79 per year/$6.58 per month. it's an okay deal if the above features are something you need/want.

(3,073 posts)Makes it REALLY easy to buy stuff- two clicks and it's on the way to you in 2 days. So, if you are like me (currently on a very strict budget and an impulse shopper on occasion), you really need discipline to stay away unless you are looking for something specific. Overall however, it's an amazing service. Forget a birthday gift? No problem- shop and it's there in 2 days. Running low on makeup but don''t feel like trudging to the mall- presto- it's there in 2 days. Plus you get access to Amazon movies /streaming, etc. and that's the only place you can currently watch Alpha House which was a terrific and very funny series written by Gary Trudeau.

(6,671 posts)after that, it will be $79 a year. I LOVE it. Most things come with 2-day free shipping and they have great deals. I just downloaded my 4-year old son's favorite show ... the whole series of Paw Patrol for $21 on our iPad.
We order enough stuff on there that it is worth it. I got a highly rated personal scale for $25 in two days with free shipping.
If you have a Kindle, you get lots of books for free.

(11,155 posts)which should be 6 months free and then 50% off and not $7/month or $94/year.

(6,671 posts)You just have to look ... I found so many "Made in the USA" products there.

(27,434 posts)I ordered a couple of items that the shipping alone would have been over the $79.
Another site that has free shipping on orders over about $50 is Wayfair. No fee either. I got a 60 lb cat tree and some fairly large pieces of furniture with free shipping. Lots of stuff on that site, too.

(38,958 posts)they have some different stuff and as you said the shipping is generally free. I had a problem on one item and it did take them a bit to resolve it (after I nudged them a couple of times) but overall they seem good.

(26,582 posts)I'm a student, so totally worth it. Even if I want a student I'd totally pay $79/year for Prime.

(4,475 posts)It was so useful that I signed up for a regular Prime account after that.
The free 2-day shipping alone makes the price worth it. But there are also a lot of other features that are incredibly awesome - free streaming video is one. There is also a Kindle borrowers library if you are a Prime member with a Kindle.
Something nobody has mentioned yet is that you can share Prime membership benefits with up to four household members. So anyone who lives with you can get Prime benefits on their own Amazon account for free.

(41,956 posts)You get a lot of perks like book loans and 2 day shipping, and believe me, I'd spend that $79 in shipping in half a year's time. Definitely worth it! I don't think Amazon's the devil even though I love small book stores and hope they find a way to have a resurgence. Still, they've opened up a bunch of convenient possibilities for me.

(42,540 posts)There are enough well-known books that show up in the first few pages when I did my initial search to think, "Wow, this is going to be great!" Twelve months in, it's getting harder and harder for me to find one book a month that I am interested in checking out. Lots of books and authors you've never heard of, usually for good reason.

(4,299 posts)I have family members with extensive Kindle libraries. Amazon indicates you can loan a book one time for 14 days, but most recent ebooks (paid full price) cannot be loaned because the publisher does not allow it. A bummer for me as I've run through most of the non-young adult fiction from my local library and I'm currently burned out on the old free reads. I had signed up for Amazon Prime (instead of my Netflix streaming) but canceled because of this.
On the plus side, Amazon manages my Kindle and facilitates my library borrowing for free. I canceled my Prime after two months, instead of 30 days, and they gave me a full refund without my asking (I know they are bad employers, but sometimes there is no alternative).

(20,886 posts)Got free, two day shipping for a part for a client and watched movies for a month. I decided not to continue for three reasons.
1. I don't buy enough stuff to make the free shipping worthwhile.
2. I didn't want it in addition to Netflix, and...
3. Amazon wasn't streaming to Apple TV at that time.
I hear they have since added Apple TV to streaming, so if I dump Netflix, I would go with Amazon.
