The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHow many DUers can contact you away from DU ?
I'm not talking about on Facebook but by phone or irl ?
When my DU friends go poof overnight, I think about what happened to 'em.

(20,176 posts)I don't want people to worry about me but I vanish from time to time intentionally...and I intentionally don't make permanent connections with people; I further go to lengths to keep my IRL life separate from my online life.
There are a small handful of people who I've known for 10+ years that know who I am and can contact me through Facebook. I wouldn't want any closer connections than that and even those people are carefully-curated.

(8,217 posts)It just hasn't gotten to that.
I mean, heck, I even mentioned a cooked Chicken crawl in MD, where we would go to different restaurants.
That never materialized.
I decided that I won't bother unless someone here around my area decides to contact me and says we should hang.

(72,300 posts)My hearing aids make conversations very difficult until I become familiar with someone's speech patterns. Before the hearing aids I was lipreading more than I was aware of. It's still funny when I answer a question that wasn't exactly what was being ask.
Anything that adds to hilarity is great.

(28,749 posts)It might be nice to have some IRL DU friends just hasn't happened yet.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)Thought I was going to change that last year but I was too broke to travel. Maybe I'll have better luck this year.
Do you know if any of your DU friends live close to you ?

(28,749 posts)I am in Mass.

(10,624 posts)I'm a little shy about the internet. Sometimes people aren't really what they seem to be.

(10,624 posts)I get my shit together. I'm a small town boy and almost all the women I meet IRL are married. It'll either be online dating, permanent celibacy, or sitting around & waiting for other marriages to fall apart like mine.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)Meet in a public place for a cup of coffee.
Don't even think of a dinner date until you know her irl. It's too much stress.
Only twice I was really glad that it was an afternoon first date.

(72,300 posts)I'm sure they were worried about you.
It must have made you very happy to hear from them.

(175,731 posts)One even contacted EarlG to keep an eye out for me. Of course, I had no computer access.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I didn't have a computer with me last Fall when I left home for 10 days that turned into more than a month.
I sent a text to cliffordu saying this was the way I felt.
I really missed DU that much!
greatauntoftriplets
(175,731 posts)At least you were able to contact cliffordu.
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)He made me laugh through a very difficult time. I'll never forget how important that was to my sanity.
I don't plan to travel that far again. It was interesting but I'm still waiting to be paid for that job. It's doubtful if I'll take a job that'll keep me on the road for more than two nights this year.
greatauntoftriplets
(175,731 posts)It's hard to be away from home for long periods of time and your travel certainly isn't a vacation. cliffordu's a good guy.

(72,300 posts)I looked around outside this morning none of the bulbs are coming up yet.
Friday was pleasant when I did my monthly BJ's shopping trip. Last night wasn't bad, only down to 28°. The high today will be 39°. Mebbe, I'll actually go out for a short walk before my hips totally forget how to move.
BTW ... How do you keep an ice cream cone from melting all over that pretty basket?
femmocrat
(28,394 posts)We can actually see our grass!
You keep the ice cream from melting by eating it first, of course!

In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I met my first DUER at a meet-up sponsored by Will Pitt in Boston. A lot of those members are no longer part of DU.
I have plans to meet more DUers.
Rhythm

pipi_k
(21,020 posts)none.
I don't mind being friendly to, or with, DUers, but I really don't want my online life to intersect with my RL.
It's nothing personal, though.
I'm not a very good friend, I'm afraid.
I sometimes have fits of depression that cause me to lose contact with people for a long time. Fortunately, my long-term RL friends (40+ years) understand and don't hold it against me. We just take up where we left off before I crawled into my shell.
So I really don't need any more reasons to feel guilty about not staying in personal contact with people...
Blue_Tires
(55,445 posts)and I've got a bunch of DUers on my facebook page...Only I've long since forgotten matching up the real names with DU names, so they're pretty much strangers on my account

(56,828 posts)but, I could not contact anybody still on DU directly. I could contact one former DUer, but she lives like 2 miles away from me.
