This past Saturday the intercom rang, the person calling was a friend's mother. (Friend lives 2 floors below me). Mom couldn't get my friend on either the land line or her cell phone. I buzzed Mom in and met her at the apartment door. Two neighbors also were helping her bang on the door. We called the maintenance man, who found that the office did not have a key to get into the apartment. The maintenance man had gone out into the yard and saw all the lights were on, her purse was on the floor and the cat was running around crazy. The maintenance man drilled out the deadbolt. My friend was found on her bedroom floor semi-conscious. Medics came & took her to the hospital. When I saw her on the floor I saw that her foot was black.
Updates from her family culminated with today's fact, she had her leg amputated above the knee. She is fighting an infection throughout her body, low potassium levels, high sugar levels (she has never been diagnosed as a diabetic, it is thought to be trauma induced diabetes), and a wound that is the flesh eating type. She is on a respirator at this point.
She is only 58. Minimally she had laid there for 24 hours.

(4,033 posts)just 5 minutes from our building. Her family all lives within 15 minutes of the hospital. Family support at this hospital, I know from experience is excellent as is their medical care.

This is the most terrifying story I've read in a long time.

(4,033 posts)I saw her on Wednesday, did some shopping & banking for her. She has since about Thanksgiving time, been complaining that she had broken several toes. Though I have often told her she should see a Doctor, her answer was "no, there's nothing they can do for it". I disagree, I thought the toes could be splinted and her foot put in one of those ugly blue boots.
Her mom talked to her on Thursday saying she would bring over lunch on Saturday. So sometime between this call Thursday and Friday at noon (we know noon, because a neighbor put her mail under the door & it was still there Saturday) she fell and we found her about 1 p.m. on Saturday.
I had noticed a sore on her left calf (leg that was amputated) asked her what it was, and she blew it off. I also didn't like how her leg looked, it was mottled. She blew this off.
She's been captive in her apartment since late November & has been telecommuting. As she is CFO of her company it's been easy for her to do. Most of the banking I've done for her has been deposits into the Company's account.
How this happened, and as quickly as it did, is downright frightening.
Thanks for letting me vent.
