And do you frequent it?
Mine is a mediocre Italian restaurant. The bad thing is they used to be a real good restaurant. I haven't been there in a couple of years and I guess it's time I see if they are still mediocre.

(16,950 posts)They originated in Berkeley and our last trip up that way, we wanted to go to the original location, but there were about three locations in Berkeley and we didn't know which one it was. We are Peetniks to the max! Even our most recent trip to Monterey, I drove out of the way to go to the Peet's on Munras Street, and the man behind the counter knew all the locations I go to by where we live in Orange County. It would be heaven to be in walking distance of a Peet's. I'm jealous!

I go to QFC often (I don't do the main household grocery shopping, tho.) and both restaurants (neither one of which is a chain). Oh, and of course, Starbucks. There's one inside the QFC and the other is across the parking lot. I never need to go far for the little bit of shopping I do.

(20,176 posts)Self employed and work from home. I daresay the 2' between my bedroom and office makes my nearest business the closest nearest business of any DUer. (Adjacent doors on the end of a hallway. I can stumble the distance between my desk and my bed without waking up...and have)
Excluding my own, there's a woman running an antique shop out of her garage next-door. I don't frequent her because she's a vulture...she literally befriends people so they'll leave her things in their wills, things that she sells as soon as they are dead.

(12,132 posts)down the block. I've lived in this house for almost 30 years and the sub shop has been here since before I got here. I ate there a couple times about 24 years ago but never liked it - we went there for lunch a few times when I worked at a boat place a little further down the street.
Then, during election season, I noticed they had put up some Romney/Ryan signs and I was glad I never made a habit of eating there. Fuck them dopes.

(10,893 posts)there is a strip mall where they have a Westside Pizza, a Safeway, and a Rite Aid. Near my parents' house in East Oakland, the closest business is "Quality Donuts", near Burchalter Elementary.
I go to Safeway twice a week for groceries, Westside Pizza and Rite Aid roughly once every two months, and to Quality Donuts for a dozen donuts once a week during my school breaks.

(34,131 posts)I used to run it, now I lease the facilities to others and the people running it take care of my horses.
The next closest business is a computer repair business almost across the street - I don't use him since I know a good liberal who runs a computer business in town. He's worked on my computers off and on for over twenty years.
Then a couple of miles up the road is a country store on the National Register of Historic Places that is known for their smoked sausage: http://www.bradleyscountrystore.com/

And an antique store called Whitehall at the Villa Antiques. I've NEVER been in the shop,

a lot when we lived in MO and NE, but gave up antiquing when we moved here.

There are greens, a bar, a couple of restaurants, a store for golf stuff, a couple of swimming pools, hiking trails, and other areas for other events. The local farmer's market meets there.
It's another 5 miles to the nearest store at the edge of town; a shopping center with a grocery, a starbucks, a mcdonald's, a bank, a cleaners, a couple of other restaurants and hair cutting salon.

That would be the IGA. It's 5 miles to town (we live out, way out). It's really small, the aisles so narrow we joke Gene should make them one way. But he does have the best meat counter in a 50 mile radius. Sucks to go in there on a weekend in the summer because of all the lake people stopping to get their grilling supplies.

(21,020 posts)post a photo of it except it's a piece of Americana...
They don't sell gas there anymore, but the restaurant part is still open. The inside is straight from the late 1940s to mid 1950s.
We go there every Sunday morning to have breakfast and chat with some of the other locals. Lots of fun.
Sort of a funny story about that big tree behind the "Gas" sign over the gas pumps...It's been cut down because it was rotting, but before that, and when they were selling gas, one of the owners (they are mid-70s) would have a cult following of turkey buzzards sitting in that tree watching him pump gas. One of the last full service stations... Anyway, after the tree came down, they just sort of flew around aimlessly (he said he had to keep moving or else they'd think he was dead) until they found another tree suitable for their surveillance.
Now that they don't sell gas anymore, the buzzards have moved on...

(50,528 posts)Every once in a while they'll apologize by lowering the price of their gas to the city average, but their pumps are set up to recognize a debit card as a credit card and charge you 6 cents/gallon for the privilege of using it so no, I don't go there.
Right next to my apartment building (their building is six feet from mine) is a fast food place that's been there so long it used to close for the winter. (It also used to be a bona fide Drive In with carhops and all.) Sometimes I go there when I want to grab a quick bite before going to work on Tuesday.
On the other side of the building is a big office complex that contains the North Idaho bureaus of one of the Spokane TV stations and the Spokane paper, and a bunch of lawyers' offices.
Go past the gas station and down a block, and you'll find the Chamber of Commerce, a pretty decent coffee shop that roasts on the premises, an iffy Oriental restaurant, and the beginning of the downtown bars-boutiques-bistros district.
If you go straight up the hill you'll find the city quickie-wed chapel and some professional offices. A block past that is the phone book publisher my company owns.
After that there's a Christian Daycare Center, and right next to that is my office. (To all the folks who cut down their carbon footprint by purchasing a Prius to drive to work, I fart in your general direction. If you want to seriously cut your carbon footprint, move to walking distance from work. I buy gas once a month whether I need to or not, and sometimes I could get away with not.)

(6,151 posts)RedNeckLand/flyover country is only 12 blocks square. The church is catty corner across the alley, and the bank I use is just a block farther. The bank I use is only about one more block, and the town square with a few businesses still there including my favorite hardware store, weekly newspaper, and a lumber yard. 2 funeral homes since the whole county has to come here. In a different direction from home there's a nice public library that I'll miss when the GOP manages to shut it down. About half a mile away there's a decent grocery store about half the size or less than a real supermarket store and a few tiny other shops like a pharmac. 2 gas stations; stuff like that.
