Mr. Peabody and Sherman: a 3 1/2 year old too young for this?

I loved that cartoon when I was a child. I was thinking of taking my grandson to it; he is 3 1/2.
After reading the synopsis, though, I think maybe the plot is too out there for him to enjoy the movie.
We took him to the Lego movie recently and that was definitely more adult, very liberal humor, and
he got a bit lost. He watched it, but he wasn't enjoying it like he did Planes.

Anyone have any idea here?

Thanks.

He's an above average 5 yr old. She said he didn't get the whole concept but seemed to enjoy it.

He liked the Lego movie better. He wants to see that one again.
