With (Facebook) friends like these...

I got a Facebook friend request last month from a high school classmate that I hadn't seen or heard from in 30 years. I've accepted those before and have usually been happy to re-kindle an old friendship but this one was different.

Out of the 300 or so people in my class this was the one guy I would have considered an enemy. He was loud, arrogant, stupid and prone to violence. The last conversation I had with him consisted of him threatening to kill me because I said "Hi" to his girlfriend and me calling him an asshole. I like to think that people can change so I mulled over his request for a few days before eventually deciding that I just didn't want to reconnect with this individual.

A few days ago his name popped up again on FB but this time it was in a local news story from my home town. When the cops showed up at his house to serve a warrant for his arrest on charges of domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon and criminal confinement of his most recent girlfriend, he gave them permission to search his property where they found his METH LAB.

Some people never change.

not the least bit embarrassed about being bigoted, greedy, callous, gun nuts, anti-government, etc. I've been called all kinds of things by some of them. Heck, didn't like em then, and certainly not now.

I've had people friend me just long enough to see the words "atheist" and "Liberal" in my profile then they either quietly disappear or they try to "save" me.

Seeing as I come from a backward, conservative town I'm actually surprised at the ones who share my progressive viewpoint. Like me, most of them moved away a long time ago.

but then, I went all 4 years of high school to a private christian school run by fundamentalist baptists.

What surprises me is that I didn't get mass-unfriended when they saw "Liberal atheist democrat" in my about me section.

A few said good-bye but most are hanging in there - I think they think they can turn me back. lol
