Who would be in favor of adding this new feature to DU?

Currently we can trash a threat but are unable to place a thread on ignore. I would love to see that feature added because when you find that thread that just sends you over the edge, you find silly, or whatever you can just hit that button and it disappears from your view. There would be no need to get sucked into fruitless debates that escalates out of control and gets someone alerted on. Let us have the ability to just cut things off at the pass.

2. Trash does not hide the thread on your view.

Stand back and look at some of the threads out there that evolve in a long series of tit for tat, total absence of civilized debate, etc.

I would love the option to hide that thread and move on. If your first instinct it so "walk away" have the option to hide the thread. It might help people to keep from getting sucked into discussions that deteriorate and end up with alerts on posters. It might improve the civility of the board if you can cut some of the problems off at the pass. If people want to get into a p*ssing contest over a issue why give them an audience?

4. So far mine do not seem to be disappearing.

I too have started using trash with vehemence and I really want them to go away.

I was asked to serve on a jury for an alert today. I looked at the thread and my reaction as like - Are you kidding me? There was sniping going on back and forth and by the time I read through the thread I did not blame the person who made the comment that got her alerted on (and the retort was pretty mild considering what I have seen other people write and get alerted on). The alert just reminded me of a kid running to the Principal and complaining that Joey is picking on Jimmy.

I think that the alert system should be improved, particularly if DU moves to a 7 member jury. The alerter should be required to actually make a credible case for the alert and not fall back on A called B a name or alerts on a thread that is god know how long with god knows how many responses that the jury may be expected to read through to figure out what or earth the alerter is upset about. When I get a jury request and look at the thread and and realize that it is going to take me to forever to figure out what is going on, I back out and cancel out of jury service. If an alerter cannot spell out in great detail what his/her beef is in a thread that could have responses running for pages, why should be take the complaint seriously? I would hope that a Moderator would at least review an alert before putting it out to a jury panel to determine if the alerter has even made a credible case for alerting on a post.

9. Ignore the thread would give you instant

gratification while you have to move in and out of the group for it to disappear I believe. It should immediately remove any temptation to get into useless, unproductive tit for tat arguments where it just is not worth the time or energy.

already hides the thread. I don't understand the OP. Are you using a device that might have an issue with trash thread like an i-pad or something like that? If so, I could understand there might be a glitch which keeps your trash thread from working.

I guess I will trash away. I guess it is just as easy to set a trash number per group, pop to a different group begin again and move to another group then return to the original thread. We could develop a new game to see who can trash the most threads in a fixed amount of time.

When I trash a thread. it's gone. I don't see it anymore.

15. Trash the thread does not make the thread

go away instantly like Ignore a member makes posts by that member vanish from your view. I believe that when you trash a thread it does not disappear from your view until you leave that group. Ignore could be a much more time efficient method then trash.

I just checked out my trashed word list and it looks like a stratified representation of the history of DU outrage (including four different spellings for "Pistorius"......lol.)

25. I am sitting hear trying to come up with a

list of words that I can put on ignore.

DU is a large board and, unless you spend all your time online, there are a lot of members you will never even know exist.

It is so funny, I was on a jury earlier today where a member was alerted for something that he/she said about another member. I had never and noticed the person who the comment was supposed to have been targeted at until I read through the thread.

Later on I was reading another thread and saw a comment made by the aggrieved party of the juried comment and realized that I had no desire to read anything they guy had to say. I went straight to ignore member. Reading additional comments by this guy on the second thread made me understand why the person made the comment that he/she was alerted on. I predict that today's thread will not be the only thread that they guy gets into a tit for tat argument on DU. I chose the option of not being in the playground when the next fight breaks out.
