(8,028 posts)Miriam Blaylock: It's "Lakme" by Delibes. Lakme is a Brahmin princess in India, she has a slave named Malika.
Sarah Roberts: Malika...
Miriam Blaylock: In a magical garden they sing how they follow the stream to its source, gliding over the water.
Sarah Roberts: Is it a love song?
Miriam Blaylock: I told you, it was sung by two women.
Sarah Roberts: It sounds like a love song.
Miriam Blaylock: Then I suppose that's what it is.
Sarah Roberts: Are you making a pass at me, Mrs. Blaylock?
Miriam Blaylock: Miriam.
Sarah Roberts: Miriam.
Miriam Blaylock: Not that I'm aware of, Sarah.

Tuesday Afternoon
(56,912 posts)from another movie for anyone who still wants to play:
"Love is passion, obsession, someone you can't live without. I say, fall head over heels. Find someone you can love like crazy and who will love you the same way back. How do you find him? Well, you forget your head, and you listen to your heart. And I'm not hearing any heart. Cause the truth is, honey, there's no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love, well, you haven't lived a life at all. But you have to try, cause if you haven't tried, you haven't lived."

(43,173 posts)Don't ask me why I love it, because I can't fully explain why. I know all sorts of people have wanted to extrapolate a deep, overall meaning to it. But I think for me it might be as simple as the fact that it gave me six movies in one, with all six stories being deeply engrossing for me.
Plus the fact that it was visually stunning and wonderfully crafted, and that it was just so ambitious--adapting a seemingly unadaptable novel, and doing a great job at it.
Believe it or not, it seems to be growing a pretty solid cult audience, so you and I are not as alone as you might first think.
I will say it is a movie that deserves a second viewing....in the first viewing, people might get a little distracted by the makeup jobs and what actor is playing what character in each story. Whereas once you watch it a second time, you get to just enjoy the movie for what it is, just a great piece of art and filmmaking.
By the way, Roger Ebert wrote a great review of Cloud Atlas, sadly one of his last before he passed:
