The Aldworth Giants

In the parish church at Aldworth, Sussex, there are effigies of knights known as The Aldworth Giants. They are member of the De La Beche family. They are supposed to be life-size and some of the effigies are over 7 feet tall. Many were retainers to the king, warders of the Tower of London and sheriffs. They were a very influential family in the 14th century.

The Giants had names like John Long, John Strong, John Never Afraid and John Ever Afraid. John Ever Afraid was supposed to have been placed in the church wall. It is said that he sold his soul to the devil in exchange for riches. The devil vowed to take his soul whether he was buried inside or outside the church. He cheated the devil by being entombed in the church wall, neither inside or outside the church.
