(2,805 posts)I recently found that putting them in a paper bag really does work to ripen them quickly. Even a rock hard one can be ripened in 2-3 days.
My biggest gripe is with the large California ones that half the time are rotten/brown inside even before they ripen. I like the texture of those but am routinely disappointed with ones that have those brown streaks in the flesh. I've stuck with Haaz this year. Get 'em before the drought takes its toll.

(30,947 posts)When I lived in South Florida, there was an avocado tree in my back yard. When those avocados dropped off the tree, there were so many that they just rotted on the ground. And they were huge. Neighbors would ask me if they could have some. I could not eat them all so I told them to help themselves.
When I see the avocados in the grocery store, they look like pygmies compared with my avocados.

(2,805 posts)My brain must of misfired. You are right it is the Florida ones that are large. They have a different consistency than the California ones which I like sometimes. Thanks for setting me straight.

(4,465 posts)I buy 5 at a time every week. I get a couple of ripe ones and then a few hard ones and leave them on the counter. They never go to waste, I just make dip if it's too soft.

(4,465 posts)I buy them bc they're healthy and cheap, but I can't eat them if they're over ripe, way too sweet. I make banana bread with the ones I waited too long to eat.

(6,011 posts)I often wait too long and they get dark streaks inside and have an unappetizing smoky or bacony smell.
As soon as they "give" just a bit, put in the fridge (but not if it's too cold), then they don't over-ripen.
