One of my crowns fell off while I was eating dinner!

It's weird - it doesn't hurt at all. The only reason I knew it came off was that I bit down on it.

Of course, it wouldn't happen on a weekday so I can get into the dentist fast. The most annoying part is what's left of the tooth is really, really ragged.

I didn't find it at the first place I looked online. Got any recommendations for where to get it?

Problem is unless we make a special trip into town, I wouldn't get the stuff until my husband gets home after his game very late Saturday night. I'll see how annoying it is - we may run into town tomorrow if it bothers me tonight.

I has a big hole in one tooth and that stuff protects it until I get to a dentist and have it filled. It lasts a looong time and you can chew with it.

4. My dentist does have an emergency service

Since I don't intend to go anywhere tonight, I may call in the morning. His office is one of the ones that does emergency treatment for other dentists in town!

I'm not too worried. It doesn't hurt at all, even when I flossed and brushed my teeth after dinner. It's just annoying to have that ragged thing there and of course I keep poking at it with my tongue.

7. No kidding - if it hurt, I'd have already called the dentist's office

And be biting down on a clove! They are very effective oral pain relievers in a pinch.

I may call into the the dentist's telephone service tomorrow and ask for the office to call me back Monday morning as soon as they can set up an appointment.

Here is what's cool - according to the website, they have one day permanent crown repair! That is, if there is enough of the blasted tooth to put another crown on. It doesn't feel like there is much of it left at all.

8. Not a big deal, just don't swallow it. The instructions for retriving it

ain't fun. The temporary cement does work for several days, usually.

9. Yep - I was really happy I bit it and didn't swallow!

I may go in and pick up some of the temporary cement tomorrow. According to the directions on the brands I found online it only lasts a couple of days. That would get me to Monday. But I don't want to have it come loose and take a chance on swallowing it so as long as the tooth doesn't hurt, I may not worry about it.

My dentist is really good at fitting in clients for emergencies. The first day I had an appointment with him, it turned out I needed a root canal. I set up an appointment a few days later. As I walked back in the house that day, his office called. They'd had a cancellation and time to do the root canal right then. So I drove back into town, got my root canal, and was done!

10. Check that bone density!

I'm not sure if you're loosing it, but menopause and smoking can cause you to loose that jaw bone and oops - there go the teeth. Just an FYI.

11. My last bone density scan was fine

The crown is probably 15-20 years old. I've been having to replace a lot of my old fillings and I suspect this is the same cause - aged dental cement and my crappy teeth disintegrating with time. There is some cement inside the crown that seems crumbly

With any luck and the new dental products, the new crown will probably last me the rest of my life!

Now my husband on the other hand, was losing jaw bone so bad they did bone implants. But with better dental care and constant checking, his teeth are doing much better. He's got really bad gums, but good teeth. I've got soft teeth and great gums.

12. That happened to me several weeks ago.

Bagged the crown, took it to the dentist and he cemented it right back on!



I guess when they've been on there long enough, they're at risk of coming off!

I hope that's all he has to do, stick it back on. Far too often when I've lots bits off my teeth, there has been further decay and they've had to re-do stuff.

13. Same thing happened..

I was in an airport on Superbowl Sunday, when a temporary crown popped off...and was heading out on a 10 day trip! My eternal thanks to a local dentist who actually would see me and fix it before the plane left! WHEW!

15. Now that's annoying! Good thing you could get it fixed.

My Mom was headed to a class reunion (I think it may have been her 40th or 50th) when she stopped here on her way. She took one bite of something and her fixed bridge that replaced all her top front teeth broke! I called my old dentist and he could/would not see her.

Rather than go to her reunion, Mom turned around and went home. I felt so bad for her - she'd been looking forward to that reunion for months.

17. She did manage to go to the 50th reunion of her high school class

But some of the graduates had passed away by then. Since Mom was valedictorian, she was missed at the 40th one. She had not been able to go to previous reunions due to money concerns and taking care of her kids.

It is sort of a tribute to dentists that her bridge had lasted that long, though. She had those front teeth pulled when she was a Navy Nurse - they were very protruding and braces were not available in the Depression. In the Navy, one of the dentists offered to pull those teeth and make her a bridge. It made a huge difference in her appearance. She never smiled in photos as a kid and young woman until after she got her bridge. When she smiled, she was a beautiful young woman.

Her bridge lasted from circa 1943 until 1979. The replacement is still strong!

I really love good dentists. They can make such a difference in peoples' lives!

The one that fell off was put in by my old, now retired dentist. He was a traditionalist and didn't trust some of the new compounds used for crowns and fillings - "new" as of twenty to thirty years ago. The gold one above that was put in my my new dentist since he said the materials facing each other should be the same stuff.
