Being a Brit I sometimes wonder (maybe NSFW for the USA)

About the terror of nudity expressed by some RWs. I read about the attempt to cover the nipple of a female figure on a State Seal, the loud complaints about children seeing "nekkid" women in art galleries, the censorship of public art and the NSFW warnings

WTF

I mean
WTF

It is not like anyone who sees such images is going to become a raging sex maniac - so why f'n well hide them???

In Truro we have had The Drummer on display for some years

Florence has had David for centuries

Canova's 3 Graces (enlightenment porn) is on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum

I find it similarly baffling. Who could forget that buffoon John Ashcroft ordering the statue of Justice to be covered up?

What really never ceases to amaze me is how the same people who are so offended by nudity don't blink an eye at horrific violence. As someone pointed out once, kissing a naked breast gets you an R rating, but cutting off a breast only rates a PG.

I probably mangled that, but I do find the sentiment genuinely puzzling.

It would force our advertising industry to actually come up with some new creative concepts.

Besides, turning people into sex-crazed maniacs by suppressing all of their natural urges supports the prison-industrial-complex. Have to keep all those privatized prisons filled up, you know.

Unfortunately, saying that is really not being all that sarcastic.

There were clips of Frank on David Brenner's show in my FB zappa fan groups. Probably discussing rating rock records, Frank said; "So what? Sex is good for yah!"

Frank loved and enjoyed sex, which embarrassed poor daughter Moon cuz of Dad's appreciation and consumption of groupies.

And Frank and Europe always had a mutual appreciation. He's always been a bigger rock star over there than here. Which is ironic, because at his core frank was very patriotic towards the ideals America was founded on. One of which was freedom and he was actually a historical cog in the gears that led to the Velvet Revolution in Eastern Europe in the late 80's. To the "underground" trying to shed oppression, Franks music was a beacon of the American spirit of freedom, which Frank pretty much completely owns.

cut n paste from http://www.afka.net/articles/1990-05_Billboard_1.htm

Billboard: And you met with Czechoslovakian president Vaclav Havel. What did he say?

Zappa: He said that he likes my records, especially the one that I did with Capt. Beefheart.

Billboard: Your records were never distributed in these countries.

Zappa: No, they've always been illegal. Also, the people that purchased them, or acquired them, or even possessed transcripts of the lyrics were beaten by the secret police. On one of the occasions, when we were doing kind of a question-and-answer thing in a club in Prague, there were two guys who said that they had been grabbed by the secret police and before they were beaten, the guy said, "We are now going to beat the Zappa music out of you." And nobody in the audience seemed too surprised about it, because apparently it has happened to a lot of people.

And then there was another statement that was made in Czech by one of the guys in the audience at that same time and I had it translated. And what it said was that when the secret police would arrest you, they would question you and the two biggest enemies of the state at that time – which apparently was the '70s – were Jimmy Carter and Frank Zappa. And I'm going, "What the fuck am I hearing here?"

And then NPR ran a little thing in the middle of the week – an interview with an East German guy who talked about how if you owned one of my records in East Germany your phone got tapped and they followed you around. So, let's ask ourselves this question: If I'm such a menace to those kinds of systems, then why in the fuck aren't they playing my records on the air in the Land Of The Free and The Home Of The Brave? Could it be that there's not much difference between one authoritarian regime and another?

I'm having John Ashcroft flashbacks to that idiot using some 20-30 THOUSAND dollar velvet curtains to cover up two statues outside the SC because of a breast.

I wonder where this idea that we should be ashamed of our bodies comes from... hmm.

Those are incredible pieces of art you shared. Just amazing works.

Being an American male, the sight of women's breasts makes me lose any semblance of self control. That's why I need my puritanical societal standards to keep me from seeing such things lest I get the urge to run outside and molest someone.

That is why government, religions, corporations.... All try to control the context of sexuality.

In America, the corporations want to use sexuality to control people to buy products/services. If you could see boobies and penises for free then you wouldn't have to pay corporations to see them.
