Furry Day is not what you think

Furry Day was celebrated May 8th, perhaps a corruption of Flora's Day, to mark the coming of summer. A band of merry-makers go singing and dancing and drinking in the streets. If they find someone at labor, they make him ride on a pole which they carried to the river. The laborer must pay a fine or try to leap the river at the widest part. They go to the schools and demand the children be released, permission was invariably granted. They danced and drank all day, and claimed the right to go a procession through any home, in at one door and out the other. The party continued until midnight.
