I wonder what they'd do. Judging from the tail movement, the cat wasn't happy.

Which I did a lot until I learned respect but that was not cool for baby or cat.

crawling across the cat like that? Or could get eyes scratched?

That's just so wrong.

I was scratched once by a cat for petting it's head. Owner did not let me know before hand that it was not one to like that.

So for this cat to hold back, to me, is impressive.

I think he sensed that it was beneficial to accept it as long as it was more massage than mauling, and that baby and cat probably each weigh ~16 lbs.

One cat hid from the baby all the time. One cat we think had kittens, as she would tend to treat the baby like a baby kitten (occasionally lay down by the baby and groom her, allowed the baby to crawl over and "snuggle" or slobber on her), and another female cat was a fairly personable, would come over and sniff the baby then walk off (or jump up, steal her food and jump down). Then there was her mom's cat, which was a big fluffy Ragdoll mix that didn't mind being tortured as long as you hugged him. Both cats that interacted with her would sleep with her - once she was already asleep.

If she (the baby) would grab at, lunge at, or knaw on any of the cats that would interact with her, they might hit at her if they couldn't quickly get away (or didn't feel like moving), but it was always with the pads only, claws in, and they'd stop at the one thwap and hiss to get her off them.

She never got a scratch from either until she was almost 14 months old; I guess by that time, they figured out she was no longer a baby kitten that needed to be taken care of, but was now a proper "kitten" that should know consequences for going past the line.

Grandbaby's first understandable word wasn't Mommy or Daddy, it was Kitty. There was Kalikat (Kali) and 'insakitty (Princess) and Eriskitty (Eris) and Ixakat(Pixal, her mom's cat) before there was Mommy or Daddy or Grandy or Damma. She's now two and a half, and still loves kitties. But at least now, she knows which ones she can grab and lug around, and which ones she should just pet or scritch if they come near her or sit on her lap.
