Wedding Customs
In the north of England the custom amongst the young men at wedding was to strive to be the first to pluck the garters and ribbons from the bride's legs. The bride was frequently thrown down at the altar in the sport. Bits of the bridal garter and ribbons were worn in the gentlemen's hats and tied to the piper's bags at weddings. To avoid injury, brides began to freely bestow extra garter ribbons to the guests.
