Obviously after cleaning it is some way and maybe even cooking it some more. But the question is, would you serve it or would you toss it?

(5,946 posts)my mother in law served a turkey after she wrestled it out of her dog's mouth. The dog stole it hot out of the oven, where she was cooling it. She said she cut off all the dogs bites. it was hard enough eating 2 thanks giving dinners, so let's say our appetites were not so good that day.

(10,520 posts)it's too hot not to cook any germs it might have picked up from the floor!
This is assuming you obey the 20-second rule (anything picked up from the floor within 20 secs. is ok. Not sure I believe that, but if it's hot enough, yeah).

(6,913 posts)I would have served it without re-grilling but spouse wanted to put it back on the grill. I sometimes remind myself that our ancestors managed with dirt floors.

(287 posts)No doubt about it. Serve it. If it's good enough to eat yourself, it's good enough to serve to your guests.

At least I think it was Julia Childs...it may have been another famous teevee chef.
Changed my thinking forever. I just rinse off the dog hair that is inevitably clinging and give things some extra cooking time.

(22,756 posts)and if not... what a great story!
"...Julia then worked with the OSS Emergency Sea Rescue Equipment Section, where she helped develop shark repellent. The repellent was a critical tool during WWII, and was coated on explosives that were targeting German U-boats. Before the introduction of the shark repellent, curious sharks would sometimes set off the explosives when they bumped into them.
From 1944-1945, Julia was sent overseas and worked in Ceylon, present day Sri Lanka, and Kunming, China. During these last two years in the OSS, Julia served as Chief of the OSS Registry. Julia -- having top security clearances -- knew every incoming and outgoing message that passed throughout her office, as her Registry was serving all the intelligence branches. During her time in Ceylon, Julia handled highly classified papers that dealt with the invasion of the Malay Peninsula. Julia was fascinated with the work, even when there were moments of danger..."

(73,630 posts)Back when I was stationed in Germany, all four of us in my office got a free turkey for Thanksgiving.
Anyway, later after the break, we all sat around and told each other how we spent the holiday. Turns out the youngest airman dropped her turkey while taking out of the oven. Guess what she did
She TOSSED it. Whoa, everyone else, including myself, told her that she was crazy to toss a free COOKED turkey in the trash. We all said that we would have washed it off and stuck it back into the oven to finish it off.
Kids.

(13,421 posts)To be honest, I usually cook a turkey in a cooking bag anyway--so it'd probably be a mess, but not really compromised.
Even if I did roast that bird without a bag, I'd still serve it. Rinse off the outside, pop it back in the oven for a few, let it rest again, and serve it up. I saw that happen with a Prime Rib one time in a restaurant kitchen. That Prime was a bit too overcooked, but nobody really complained that it wasn't rare enough. (If anything, it always seemed like we needed more Medium Well Primes anyway.)
I guess I worked in restaurants for too many years to sweat the small stuff.
