Heaven's new angel: My cat Chewie
i had to put her to sleep yesterday. she was with me for ten years, and she was about 18 years old. it's so quiet in my place now...she was quite the talker...she talked all day, every day. i knew something was wrong when she stopped talking a few days ago. she deteriorated so quickly, but it was a blessing. she had never been sick before, so i am glad she did not suffer long.
when i was recovering from surgery last year, Chewie lay beside my bed for two days. when i left a little better, she jumped on the bed an licked my hand for hours. my mom told me when i was in the hospital for two days, Chewie cried almost the entire time. Chewie had her issues: she did not like her feet or her tail touched, and she did not like to be picked up. she was quite the beauty, so people were drawn to her when she'd bask in the sun outside my apartment. But woe to the person who tried to touch her...they were often greeted with a quick slap, and sometimes a scratch. Chewie was quite angry and aggressive when i first got her, but she mellowed over the years, and i learned to respect her quirks. she was a great friend and companion, and i miss her terribly. Rest in peace, my sweet girl. ![]() ![]()

2. I am so sorry!
There are never enough words to convey that. Thank you for loving her and taking care of her for all of those years. Chewie was lucky to have you, and I, too, echo the sentiment that I'm glad she didn't have to suffer long.
I hope that when the time is right...and only YOU will know when that is...that you will consider sharing your home with another needy feline. There are so many that need good homes, and rescuers like myself, would JUMP at the chance to have one placed in a home such as yours. Until that time comes, please accept my sympathies, and my wish that you have peace and be comforted. |

3. I am so sorry for your loss.
There is nothing in the world harder than saying our last goodbyes to our furry friends.
![]() ![]() Edited to second hamsterjill's thoughts. When I lost my dear Max back in 2010, it took me a couple of months to set my grief aside, but I so much missed hearing a welcoming meow when I came home each evening that I knew I had to have another kitty. I adopted another wonderful cat from the same place I had adopted Max. Butch is a great cat in his own right, and very happy to have a forever home. |

17. thank you
it was a tough decision, but i believe i did the right thing for Chewie. it is selfish to hold on to a being who is sick and suffering. a lunatic, posing as a friend, told me i put her to sleep because she did not die fast enough...fng asshole. thank you for your kindness

19. OMG how can people say shit like that?
When one of my old girls got degenerative myelopathy, she gradually got worse and worse as the months went by. She would improve, then get a little worse, etc.
It finally got to the point where not only could she not work her back legs, but she lost the use of her front legs as well. Yet her mind was still "there" and it bothered her not to be able to move around. She was almost 14 when we brought her to the vet for the final time. I just couldn't stand to see her suffer anymore. That's one of the "jobs" of pet parents...to know when our furkids shouldn't suffer anymore just because we don't want to let them go. Some people...like your friend... just don't understand that concept. You did the right thing. |

22. my former friend has cancer
a recurrence of breast cancer in her bowel lining after 15 years of being cancer-free. her cat died a few years ago, so she took Chewis's illness very personally. Still...no excuse for her callousness.

20. What a horrid thing to say to someone
who had to make a difficult decision!
But I suppose that there are people who just do not believe in euthanasia for any reasons. Personally, I would wish for someone to be that compassionate for me when the time comes. I am terribly sorry you had to have that comment made to you at a time like this. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

11. I'm so sorry
My last two cats were rescues from abusive situations and nothing gratified me more than when they learned to trust me.
Now that my kids are getting older we're going to pick up a kitty from one of the local shelters. Probably not a full on rescue though as I don't think the poor cat could put up with three kids. |

from them is that there are others out there who LOVE their animals like I do. I'm very sorry for your loss. What a sweet looking cat.

18. I'm so sorry for your loss
in some ways I'm almost more heartbroken for people when their pets die because I know how much our furry friends mean to some of us.
They love unconditionally. I hope your beloved Chewie is young and well again, wherever she is... |
