Vintage aviation photos. New York City. LaGuardia.

Sorry for the format.
Best I could do.

"In aviation's earliest days,
Long Island, New York,
particularly the central area
of Nassau County known
as the Hempstead Plains,
proved to be an ideal flying
field – treeless, flat, and
with only tall grasses and
scattered farm houses.

During aviation's infancy,
this area became known for
its intense aviation activity
and was recognized as the
center of the aviation world.

By 1910, Long Island
hosted several aircraft
factories and three airfields
from which the world's
most famous aviators set a
significant number of
aviation records.

The Island, ideally located
on the eastern edge of the
United States, at the
western edge of the
Atlantic Ocean, and
adjacent to America's most
populous city, also made it
the ideal focal point for
most of the early
transatlantic and
transcontinental flights."

What a wonderful bunch of pictures........I looked at every single one, and I was riveted.

We think of flying as routine and settled, but those pictures show so clearly how much effort went into making it so.

Just the sheer historical documentation alone is wonderful.

Thank you for bringing these to us!

He grew up in NYC. His father was in the Army Air Force during WW2, and his oldest brother, who is retired from the USAF, is visiting us tomorrow.

If he hasn't already seen them.

Nice collection of pix, although I still get a twinge when seeing photographs taken in my lifetime called "vintage."

There is a single flying example of the Sikorsky S-39 "Spirit of Igor" that was rebuilt over 40 years at a hanger adjacent to the Rochester NH Skyhaven Airport (KDAW). The paint scheme is an exact copy of one of the two planes (the other an S-40) flown by Martin and Osa Johnson on a safari to Africa and later to the South Seas where they made documentary films. "Igor" was painted as a giraffe and the other plane in zebra stripes.

There is a ton of info on the internet but the rebuild info is here: http://www.spiritofigor.com/history.html

She left here several years back for Kermit Week's Fantasy of Flight Museum in Florida which I believe has since folded-I don't know her current whereabouts...

Back in 2001, while visiting my brother in Florida I stopped by the museum and was up on a mezzanine shooting pictures. A maintenance guy stopped by and set his mop against the wall and asked if I had any questions about the aircraft. The fellow was in a jumpsuit and had a ponytail and put me in mind of Kyle Petty. I thanked him and then kind of blew him off since I figured I probably knew as much about the aircraft as he did. It wasn't until later my brother asked me what Kermit and I were talking about- Yep, I had blown off the guy who both owned AND flew everything on the field. If we get one do-over in life I'd like to ask the hippy looking dude a few questions about several aircraft....

and just a regular guy that loves airplanes.

I'm sure I met him when I was younger, but it has been so long (the late 70's) that I probably wouldn't know him if he was standing on my foot! My mother speaks of him with great fondness.

I've been by his place on I4 so many times I can't count, but never got in there. For a time a few years ago he had one of the few airworthy Constellations in the world on display right by the interstate. According to his website, the museum does not own it, so it must have been on loan. There has been a DC3 parked by the freeway for years and there has always been a mannequin attached to it in one way or another. They changed the outfit on the mannequin to suit the season, so at Christmas time it would be dressed as Santa, this time of the year it would be dressed as Uncle Sam, etc.

And I'm also old enough to remember some of that stuff from 'real life'.
I flew out of LaGuardia for several years.
