While I'm sad and heartbroken, he lived a good full life for 14 years. He was a rescue. I am here to testify that rescue pets make the best pets, ever. He touched the lives of anyone who ever came into contact with him. He kept my retired parents company for his remaining years. He always looked after my Dad, making sure he was safe.
Please, before you buy a puppy or kitten, please check your local animal shelter or rescue agency online. You are quite liable to find a forever friend.

(7,499 posts)I have been down that road and it's hell. Pets are really a big part of our families and their passing leaves a void. Mike was fortunate to find such a good and loving family.

Grieve not,
nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me
as if I were beside you.....
I loved you so --
'twas Heaven here with you.

(5,946 posts)It took me 3 years to get another dog when my border collie passed. They are so bright it is like having an adult friend. Minewas also a rescue. but she was an empath, there was no way being sad when you were with her, which is why I spent so much time away from here, people borrowed her when they were getting over a loss of their own. So I know what you mean about touching other people. Our dogs arealways the best aren't they? Non-dog people don't understand in the same way.

mine was a girl, also a rescue and an absolute delight
everyone who met her loved her
and losing her was devastating (six weeks after i lost my mom)
a friend "surprised" me with another rescue dog six weeks after that. she was ten years old and i had her for three brief years. it's been a year now since i have been dogless -- it's been the longest time in my life since i was fifteen and acquired my first canine friend.
it's been a major adjustment (i'm still not over the loss of the last one--so i'm not in any emotional place to find another companion). her "nest" (crate) is still where it always was, and when i put the dishes away i find myself being careful not to step on an invisible water bowl from a place where it was over four years ago when we had our border collie.
much sympathy to both you and your parents. i'm glad mike was a part of your lives and family. i'm sure it was wonderful.

(205,096 posts)I know how it is and I understand. My heart is breaking for you. I also adopt from rescue, senior dogs, so I've been there more than once. It certainly doesn't get any easier. Thank you for sharing this with us and for your important message. Mike looks so happy, what a great pic! He is so very fortunate to have found you...
