A strange tale about Mrs. Lib

We celebrated our 40th anniversary in May. During that time she had absolutely no interest in sports. Nada. The only thing good about sports is that we would go to different cities so I could see a game, or we would go on a bus with others. She enjoyed the travel, she enjoyed the atmosphere, she enjoyed a dog and a pop at the game. We would go to local minor league baseball in our area (Iowa/Illinois) or see some of midwest major league baseball teams - Chicago, Milwaukee, Twin Cities, Kc, St. Louis. Once we even had a 20 minute conversation with Rod Carew. She had no idea who he was (he was hitting .417 at the time)

She seldom watched anything football. She was happy when Iowa won, but her eyes would glaze over if I tried to explain how Iowa was doing etc. When our daughters played basketball I practically had to drag her to a game or two.

Not that she was exactly anti-sports, she just didn't care. She grew up when girls did little in sports in school, so it was just never a part of her life. Frankly I have been watching less and less sports over the years. The more commercials they throw in the more I lose interest - to the point that I watch only when I can flip between at least two games.

AND THEN COMES THE WORLD CUP THIS YEAR.
One SIL played soccer in HS. He turned me on to the world cup in '98. I quickly liked soccer especially the lack of commercials and the constant action.

So I am sitting watching an opening round game. She comes in and I said 'sit down and I will try to explain the game to you.' She enjoyed the game. She could see and follow the ball. She thought the players were really talented - no equipment, no use of hands, constantly running. So we watched another game and another game and.......

Next thing I know I have a real soccer freak on my hands. After we hurried home Saturday to watch the end of the last game - we came from a fundraiser, left early to catch what we could of the game. Lucky for her it went into overtime. I was informed that we would be home in front of the TV for today's game. She missed nary a minute, putting off a bathroom trip til the end of the half (gladly there was little stoppage).

We will be home at 3PM tomorrow! We have a meeting Saturday and a parade Sunday. I have already been told she can miss Saturday's game, but I am on my own Sunday.

I have lostg her to futball!

I got interested in soccer (a/k/a to the rest of the world "football) this time too. My employer (a large law firm) actually showed two games on the large-screen tv in the conference room and provided lunch or snacks - and I showed up after logging out for the day. I was disappointed we're out of the game now but hope soccer makes more inroads in the U.S.A. I also like the lack of commercials and constant action. Baseball to me is like watching paint dry.

Edit: Happy 40th Anniversary!
