Congrats to Laverne Cox - the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an Emmy

Laverne Cox "Always Dreamed" About Getting an Emmy Nomination: "But I Honestly Can't Believe It!"

Congratulations, Laverne Cox!

Not only was she nominated for an Emmy this morning for her work on Orange Is the New Black, but she made history by becoming the first openly transgender person to be up for an honor on the television industry's biggest night of the year.

I just spoke to Cox as she was on her way to the set of the hit Netflix series. Here's what she had to say…

"I absolutely dreamed about this," she said. "I dreamed big and wild my whole life. And getting an Emmy nomination is one of the dreams. But I honestly can't believe it. It's really happening."

Cox added, "I'm a black trans woman from Mobile, Alabama with a working class background raised by a single mother and I'm nominated for an Emmy! Wow!"

I absolutely adored her in "Orange is the New Black" but I don't think she's going to win. She's up against Uzo Aduba, who played Crazy Eyes in OITNB and I think Aduba is going to win the best Guest Actress Emmy (Natasha Lyon was also nominated in the same category from OITNB). Crazy Eyes was such a pivotal part in season #2 and Aduba really pulls off the mentally challenged woman in the show. I'm not sure why she is in Guest Actress since she had a big part in season #2 but sometimes the Oscars doesn't make sense.

I'm on my second run of the shows. Some parts are too painful to watch, like the scenes where it becomes clear that Morello's fantasy life turns her into a pathetically sad individual, instead of the bubbly optimist you want to believe she is.

Ubo, though. You're right. I would give it to Ubo as well. Loved the scene when she was auditioning for the Christmas show with the ice skating routine, sans ice. It turns out she is a competitive skater in real life.
