argh. i cant believe it. i adopted 3 kitties. help!!!

Last edited Sun Jul 13, 2014, 11:04 AM - Edit history (1)

i swore i would never have a cat. i just keep too many other critters. they dont play well w others. plus, i am allergic to them.
however, in the alternate reality where many of the neighbors to my farm live, this is a disney movie, i am a witch, and therefore control the beasts, especially the vermin.
in spite of the fact that they are seeing rats on THEIR OWN property, in their over stuff garbage cans, and their bird feeders, it is my property, where i waste almost no food, that must be the problem, right?
so, anyway, i got myself 3 feral kitties. there is a cook county program to teach people to responsibly manage cat colonies for rodent control. i have 3 vaxxd, chipped kitties, a brown tabby male, a brown tabby female, and a little calico girl.

i dont expect to make pets of them, but i do know that it is ALWAYS easier to take care of an animal that is half tame than not tame at all.

i talk to them when i feed them. teaching them- kitty itty, meow, kiss kiss, kitty momma is here, dinner time.
only one has a name so far. the male is kinda explosive, and came with the name of richter. i was thinking rocket before i was reminded of this.

i try to purr, which they do seem to except. the little calico was peeking out, and nervous, and when i started purring at her, she sorta sat down and stared at me.

that's about as far as i have gotten.
they are crated up to acclimate, so i have them under my thumb for a couple more weeks. i think i can turn a dog pen i have, where they are now, into their own little itty space. may see about keeping them in the larger enclosure for a bit. they should be able to hop the fence and get away from any dogs or coyotes that come around.

so, go ahead kitty friends, share your tricks and tips.
also, good kitty snacks and treats. would a kitty like a chicken wing? can a kitty eat raw meat?

i guess if i tame these little suckers, it tears it. i am a witch.
i already acknowledged a long time ago that i am a rhyming word.

eta- can kitties have eggs?

feral cats usually don't make pets, but will become accustomed to you coming and going and hearing your voice.

We adopted two feral cats - one ran off and was never seen again , the other we have had for several years - and have put a cat flap in the garage, which she uses. We initially kept them in the garage in a cage to get them used to smells, etc. and then let them out in the garage and then finally outside.

The little one left is a great mouser - we put down water and normal clean cat food, which she will eat sometimes.

As for your neighbors your kitties may help them too.

A 'feral' (prolly not, literally) adopted my daughter+, we fed him/her outside (I was dog-sitting 1+ year ago,) they allowed him/her into the house last winter but remains mostly outside, and now s/he follows daughter when she and one of their 3 dogs take walks down the (rural) road. She asked me if I'd ever heard of a person walking their cat!

My parents liked to go for walks in the evening. It wasn't unusual for them to have four or even five kitties trailing them all the way around the block! Eventually they stopped letting the kitties follow them because they were afraid a loose dog might chase them into the street.

I tried 2 barn buddies 8 years ago. They took off as soon as the blizzards were over. One I never saw again. The other I spotted about once a year for several years.

Belladonna was in the free feral barn buddy program for nearly a year before she graduated into the adoption for $$ program. At first it looked like she would stick around, although she started pulling all-nighters. Then my neighbors kit-napped her and taught her their place was her place. Then they moved away and dumped her. Then their replacements fed her somewhat and sheltered her somewhat (under their trailer through a -15 winter ) Then a year almost to the day she'd had enough of the strangers and found her way back home. I spotted her huddled in the driveway directly across the street, a rack of ribs under her lush coat, staring pitiably at me.

She was a nervous wreck and I didn't think she'd stick around. But instead, she came around. The barn is her castle, I am her favorite being. She has concluded her job is keeping Dahli company. In cooler weather, she naps on Dahli's dinner. She follows us up to the riding pasture and plays while Dahli and I play. She never skips a meal in the barn.

the good thing about the program is that if i start attracting any other cats, they will either remove them or bet them for me.

this on top of a long time friend calling the city because she decided my chickens weren't happy. yeah, i know. it was ugly.
at the block party for the 4th, i was just smothered in love. i couldnt stick around that long, because they would have danced my feet off.

13. Ferals take enormous patience.

Jul 2014

Every cat we have had for the last twenty years has been either a feral or a stray. Our current crop consists of Nissa, Skillywidden and Beau, who were all ferals, and Tylanni, a stray. They are all now indoor cats, fat and happy, except for the occasional instance of feline insanity (Beau, for instance, is terrified of the laundry basket for some reason).

I don't know how much time you have to work with them, but one trick I've had some success with is putting out food or treats, and then sitting nearby, quiet and keeping movement to a minimum until they're done eating. Eventually they come to accept you as non-threatening, and will even come close and keep you company once they're fed. With some it took months of this, 10 to 20 minutes a day, others became friendly more quickly. Depended on the individual cat.

When they were outside they were happy to get anything we gave them, but I was careful to debone chicken. It might not have been a problem, but they wolfed their food down so fast, I was leery of the possibility of choking. Now they're inside, they eat better than I do sometimes .

IMHO, the key is to let them make the first move, but provide them the opportunity to do so. And thank you for your kindness to them.

they adopt out all the ones they think can be house cats.
nonetheless, she peeks at me sometimes.
and the female tabby is starting to lay on top of the shelters sometimes.

i actually have a little 'kitty blind', but sitting still is not my strong suit.
they said 3-4 weeks in the crates.
they are also in a dog run, and i am thinking i would put their permanent stuff up, and try to keep them in the pen for at least a couple days when we let them out of the crates.

i have enough of that 8th intelligence, that naturalist thing that got so many women burned at the stake. i swear they are building a fire for me around here somewhere. lol.

i have a lot of experience w birds, and i find them falling for a lot of my shy birdy tricks.

and you are welcome, but it isnt really kindness. i need them to work for me. i cant afford freeloaders.

34. My wife and I had a similar situation
Mon Jul 14, 2014, 12:50 PM
Jul 2014

One morning we (my wife and I) were heading out to run some errands when we saw a solid grey cat near the back of our property. We immediately thought that our grey cat had somehow gotten outside. As we tried to approach it, he never let us get within 20 feet of him, always keeping the distance. We could at one point tell by the shape of his face that he wasn't ours, and that he was really thin.

So, after running errands we came back and I took out a can of tuna, put it into a bowl, and walked outside. The cat was under a bush by our patio, so I sat the bowl down and backed up maybe 10 feet or so. He tore into that like there was no tomorrow, then ran back under the bush. I put out some dry cat food where he could see it and went back inside.

The feeding went on for about 2 weeks where each time I would sit closer and closer to him as he ate. One morning I went outside to the patio and sat down with the bowl within arms reach of me. He trotted over and started to eat and I reached out and rubbed his ears. He jumped back very quickly then you could see the wheels turning in his head.. "hey, that felt REALLY GOOD!", so he runs back over to me for more ear rubbing, then back to his dish, then back to me, etc.... When I tried to get up to go back inside he let me know that I was in no way finished with his ears...lol.

We got him into a crate, took him to the vet to be checked out and to be chipped. We had him neutered (teach him to come get his ears rubbed..lol), and eventually he was adopted out. He was a really great cat that in the end loved to be held, played with, etc......

I think that he may have been an exception to the case with stray cats, but it all worked out in the end. The vet said that the cat was about 8 months old when we brought him in, so he was still pretty young.

If they stare at you, give them a nice slow blink or two rather than staring back. Talk to them when you see them, especially if you have their food.

Stuff you probably know already. Good luck with them, ferals have loads of personality if they choose to show it to you.

the staring trick i know from parrots. if you want them to know that you are cool, you face them with only one eye, blink a couple times, then close that eye for a few seconds.

tried it on the little tabby girl, and got her to settle down and stare, instead of standing ready to run. that an my lousy purring, which seems good enough.
i think i will have my next big asthma attack with them. i sound like i am purring sometimes.

there are 3-4 ferals here but had to stop feeding them because a mountain lion was roaming the area - we lost the 8 deer in a 2 month period. there are plenty of lizards and rodents around for them to feed on. when winter comes they will be fed again so they can have some fat for the cold.

when it's near zero they gather under the porches. my daughter made them shelters out of 5 gallon plastic bins. she cut doors out of one end and padded them with recycled styrofoam glued to the underside of the lid and old clothes and blankets. they really like them and use them.

when i go out i make plenty of noise and avoid going in their direction if they are on the property so they don't run helter skelter to the next property where mean dogs reside.

those are the shelters they brought, but the male keeps kicking them over.
it took a couple short 2 x 4s and a big ass rock to hold them down. they are already starting to warp.
i have some old heat ducts that have me thinking they would make a good kitty home. still have a little thinking to do on how to keep that metal from being to cold. i'm thinking i could get some carpet scraps. but they could have a fun little place. their spot is nice and shady now, ,but also pretty protected from the winter wind.
anther fun project i dont really have time for. but those are usually te best. it means i am avoiding something else. so, all good.
