Many common names for products are, in fact, trademarked.
Which means that they have a trademarked name and a generic name, but we mostly know them by the trademark name.
Example:
Band-Aid trademarked name is owned by Johnson & Johnson
Generic name: Adhesive bandage
Do you know the generic names for these trademarked names?

1.Bubble Wrap
2.ChapStick.....Lip Balm.
3. Crock-Po...Slow cooker
4. Dumpster..( yes, it is a trademark)
5. Fiberglass

(60,010 posts)Cellophane is a trademarked name, actually. It was trademarked in teh US but the patent expired, it is currently trademarked in other countries.
You got Chapstick correct!
And Bubbler!
Frisbee is ...flying disc...or, as you call it, throwing disc.

(60,010 posts)When the patents were filed, they had to describe the thing that was patented...
So the generic name is sorta legal in that it is on the patent.
For instance...
Johnson & Johnson would say they wanted to patent an "adhesive bandage" and call it Band-Aid

(50,555 posts)Go to your local Home Depot or owenscorning.com and look: O-C (who invented the stuff) spells the trademarked name with one S. And they only use the trademarked name for thermal insulation - the other nine brazillion products they make out of it are referred to as "fiber glass" or "glass fiber."
