Casting for this series of films has been splendid! Freeman and Armitage have really added nuance and humanity to their roles. And even some of the minor roles have been given an unexpected depth.

Both films so far have been disappointing. I abandoned the fervor of the purist during the LotR films, because I thought the changes Peter Jackson made for dramatic purposes were understandable. Not so with his changes to The Hobbit films.

I really thought portraying Radagast the Brown was unnecessary. Tolkien himself thought so little of Radagast that the nature wizard only appears in secondary form, as an anecdote told in flashback. His presence in the films slowed things down notably.

And so much of the second half of The Desolation was just ridiculous. Smaug hidden under the gold treasure, instead of sleeping atop it was an idiotic decision to make. And what was with the forging of the colossal gold dwarf statue? Something not even hinted at in the book!

They've got one more film left. I hope they make up for the failings of the first two...

When the dwarves and Bilbo got to Lake Town and Stephen Fry came on the screen. And I actually love Stephen Fry, but I'd had enough.
