I posted my ballot this morning. Washington State is vote-by-mail.

There are no Earth-shattering races being run here. No elections that could swing either house.

But I voted in favor of a bill empowering the state government to confiscate firearms from gun-owners purchasing them from unlicensed or unregistered sources. And I voted in favor of a similar bill that would close the gun show loophole.

Naturally, every gunfuck in the state is howling to vote that one down. I suspect it probably will be. It's hard to outspend the profitable mass-murder industry.

lots of big races and ballot items here. i know how i'm going to vote on everything outside the judges up for retention, but my family always takes a night to have dinner, go over the ballot items and fill out our ballots together.

I hate it. I loved going to the polls. I loved the shared cultural experience with my community every two years. Election Day 2008 was the most memorable voting experience I ever had; what a happy day for a lot of us.

But now, voting by mail almost seems like a chore; part of a 'to-do' list, like paying a bill...

from 2012 when people were still in line at 11:00pm. The lines for early voting were two to three hours long. Early voting started yesterday and I went to the poll right after work. Expecting to spend an hour or so in line, I was shocked when I showed up. No lines. I thought I was in the wrong place. I walked to the desk, gave them my Drivers License and ten minutes later stood in the parking lot asking myself "What just happened?"
I'm thinking it's because there are more days for early voting this year including Sundays. The churches here are big on GOTV and I imagine they will be coming as a group after services.
