I'm going to pick up the goodies tomorrow and trying to decide what to get. I probably won't get my favorites, Reese's peanut butter cups because of the possibility of nut allergies. Thinking about hitting BJ's and getting full size bars of either Milky Way or Three Musketeers, but I've also gotten the fruit snack things also in the past. Any advice?

(24,146 posts)stick them all in a bowl and let the kids pick out what they like. i've had one trick or treater nine years and i felt really bad for that kid because we couldn't very well give them a beer or a bud.

(7,720 posts)While it't not good for the waistline or teeth, candy helps to pass the time.
We always seem to have a fire going, so far we have not broken out in song, except for the time at the neighbkring deer camp when a guy broke out his concertina. My dad sung along with him, but nobody else knew the lyrics.

(33,987 posts)that is NOT what i had in mind when i commented about "deer camp"

(7,720 posts)I enjoyed that video.. I know of a guy who back in the 70s had a deer on the trunk of his car at the end of deer season. He went out of his way to drive to his brother's house. His brother had three pre-schoolers. The guy with the deer had painted the deer's nose red.

(7,720 posts)I was still childless I gave them Snickers with a 6" nail pierced through them. The kids were baffled and my brother thought I was an idiot.
(Edit to add: it might be helpful to the kids to give them some punks in addition to the lighter.)

(39,343 posts)We'll be taking our daughter trick or treating in her bff's neighborhood on the 31st.
The dads will be drinking beers and pulling the kids in little red wagons while the moms walk ahead and give disapproving looks. Jacksonville Beach does it up right. Last year there were three haunted houses on the route and a dozen parties or so. There is no vehicle traffic and a ton of Halloweeners running around like little ghouls. Kids make the holidays so fun.

(20,176 posts)Mostly because I hate them and thus they are friendly to my desire to obtain and maintain a healthy weight. Oddly, they seem popular...I get them most years and they're always a hit. I have no idea why...they're godawful.

(5,780 posts)We combine those with bags of Goldfish. It's gone over pretty well for the past couple of years. Here's the theory: we used to buy candy; then after 10/31, we'd eat the leftover candy. It got the holiday weight gain off to a flying start.

(14,933 posts)Some years we get lots of kids. I haven't actually bought any yet- I would just eat them and have to buy more. I have zero willpower.

(72,300 posts)We have three combo bags of Milky Way, Twix, 3 Musketeers. Two bags of Reese's Footballs which will never make it out the front door. Two bags of Sweet Tarts and Nerds combo bag that will be given out first.
Folks around here bring their kids by the car full to trick or treat at the homes of over 200 senior citizens. We'll turn the purple and orange lights off by 9PM.

This year I have some chocolate eyeballs that I thought were funny.

(8,258 posts)Shoot, now I'm gonna have to eat all those peanut butter chocolates myself. I'll hand out Nerds and taffy, just to be on the safe side.

I was really in a quandary there, reading about all the sugar. I've cut it out of my diet and I shudder when I think of what it does to glycemic levels, so I don't really want to give it out. There are plenty of good ideas in that graphic. I'll prob'ly go with stickers and notepads.
I know, I'm a killjoy.

(56,827 posts)and also to buy ones that I don't like so I won't eat them if they're left over. I like peanut butter & I like chocolate, but I absolutely hate Reese's Peanut Butter cups and Snickers, so I tend to buy a bunch of both. If I have leftovers, I either donate them or bring them to the office to give away.

(54,055 posts)Here in Germany, kids go around with lanterns on St. Martin's day. Same kind of thing, without the goblins and ghosts, which I kinda miss, though I prefer the Great Pumpkin.
