Why are there so many sports teams in this country with devil mascots?

Sun Devils
Red Devils
Blue Demons
etc.

How does this come to be in a historically Christian nation? They may as well call themselves the Satanists? Maybe i've been influenced by my devoutly religious parents too much, who wouldn't even let me dress up as a witch for Halloween (although they did let us trick-or-treat). What gives?

Note: I'm no longer religious and the names don't bother me. I'm just wondering.
