Blood curdling scream

So about 3 years ago I moved in with my mother to help take care of her. She's had a myriad of problems and as along as somebody lives with her she actually does well over all. She is now 80.

My biggest issue is that sometimes she will let out this horrible blood curdling scream while she's sleeping. Tonight lasted longer than most of them about 30-40 seconds. The screams scare me and it takes me quite of few seconds to wrap my head around it when it's happening.

Sometimes after they happen she makes this very unusual guttural noise that sounds almost like a bark/growl. (Not tonight)

Any suggestions?

Now that you mention it this seems to mostly happen when the t.v. is off. She usually falls asleep mackerel Jan 2015 #3

something like ocean waves may have a calming effect

I am assuming she has regular physical and mental health checkups too?

Though she is quite younger than yours, and in fairly good health, she makes miserable sounds when she has nightmares. It is terrifying, sometimes to the point that we'll wake her up to make sure that she is ok. The white noise machine may help as another user stated, but my parents sleep with the tv on.

with the tv on but last night the tv was off. I used to wake her when it happened but now I just resettle myself and go back to what I was doing. My son has the room closest to her and he usually knows when it happens. He wasn't here last night and I was on DU so I thought what the heck I will put it out there and see what others have experienced.
