The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsCan we finally dispense with the "Is Peyton Manning The Greatest QB" nonsense?
He's a punk! He has ONE ring! You want a guy named Manning who's a great quarterback? Try the one (in the entire league) who has beaten Tom Brady and the Patriots TWICE in the Super Bowl!
I am not, of course, suggesting that Eli is the greatest: No, that honor shall belong to the aforementioned Mr. Brady, sixteen days hence.

(72,790 posts)I am a NY Giants fan, and I've always thought that Eli was a better clutch QB than Peyton.

(24,146 posts)and i would not call peyton the best ever, not at all. brady is an incredible qb, but i will always root against him and relish it when sad brady shows up.

(29,149 posts)He's pretty good in the regular season, though.
Welcome to DU!

(190 posts)That would be Elway.

(17,184 posts)... that the job of the QB was to win championships, ergo the QB that had won the most championships was best. Thus, Bart Starr was the greatest QB. Or if you insist on only counting SB rings, it would be Terry Bradshaw. In any event, the QB position has changed so much over the years, it is absurd to try to single out one as "best," especially based on statistics.

(190 posts)Joseph C., to be precise.

(17,184 posts)But I did forget he won the SB four times. Thought it was 3, but that's how often he was named SB MVP.
And to think they used to say his arm was not strong enough to be a good QB. But he took over the Niners just as shorter passing was becoming the rage. He probably would not have succeeded as well in the 60's.

(21,020 posts)If not for a lucky ball bounce off of David Tyree's helmet (and an equally lucky catch of said bounce), Eli Manning's record against Brady would be 1 - 1.
So unless someone can prove that Manning actually planned that whole play, it was just a matter of stupid luck.
What's made me laugh since then (and the second Superbowl win) is that poor Eli has sunk to mediocre depths.
Although I shouldn't laugh, really. The Football Gods don't like arrogance, and I cringe before their power.
So as much as I would like to agree with you that the greatest honor will belong to Brady and the Pats tomorrow, and on Feb 1st, all I can do is cross my fingers and be hopeful.
I'd love nothing better than for Brady to get his fourth ring and then retire. Because then we Pats fans wouldn't have such high expectations every season. Would be a lot less stressful for my stomach, I can tell you that...

(182,748 posts)The Giants were flat out lucky in both of their "wins". If Welker (traitor!) catches that 3rd down ball in the second SB..... House.

(50,552 posts)Kam Chancellor, the Prince of Darkness, is thoroughly capable of ending Aaron Rodgers' season in the first quarter. I would have loved to see him play in the 1970s when the NFL didn't really care how hard you hit people.

(1,695 posts)Cuz he's busy being a HOF QB. People who know football wouldnt say he's a "punk" and judge his success by rings alone. Respect the mans skills.
Stephen Retired
(190 posts)Like, putting up great numbers in the regular season, then folding in the playoffs, with one exception? Oh yes, the man definitely has skills!
