My cat doesn't seem to understand that I'll eventually come out of there. If I get in first, he'll throw himself against the door and meow his head off. If he manages to get there before I do, it's just about impossible to get him out and when I sit down, he sits on my lap.

This latest one gets very upset when she guesses wrong and I turn to, say, the bathroom instead of the bedroom.

(23,973 posts)..door as an insult to their freedom of movement. My husband has a workshop in the basement, and any time he opens the door to that room they will shoot in there as if it is the most exciting place on the planet, even though they have been on and out of there thousands of times.

But my dog sometimes scratches at the bathroom door when I am in there. I'm like, "dog, I'll be out in 2 minutes" LOL

(22,250 posts)We have seven cats currently; the youngest two follow us to the bathroom and stand there purring and wanting to be petted. One has to watch the flushing. If there are cats in the house, privacy is an impossibility

My cat is usually there calm as can be waiting for me to let her drink from the faucet. She inspects the shower when I am finished. She has duties and takes it all seriously!

(3,275 posts)If I closed the door on him, he would bump against the door and meow. When I would let him in, he would standing in front of me and stare at the same spot on the wall. I used to joke that there must have been invisible monsters or ghosts in there that he was protecting me from. He was a really great cat.

(34,049 posts)and yet they seem to have this tremendous separation anxiety
i had cats & kittens when i was little but i don't remember what their take was on the bathroom and the door
i've had dogs since i was a teen & Never had one that gave a rats ass about what was going on in the bathroom. except one dog that was rescued when she was ten years old; for the first year or so she was my shadow and i would leave the bathroom door open--she wouldn't come in but she needed to be able to see me and know where i was. eventually she stopped coming down the hallway to check.

(115,674 posts)Many of them hate being separated from their human, and a closed door can really bother them if said human is on the other side. One of my bathroom doors has gouges all along the bottom edge from years of cats trying to claw their way in.

(34,373 posts)vulture. My housemate is disabled & requires a shower chair. Otis has taken to hanging out on the chair, hidden by the shower curtain. He lays in wait to ambush the other kittehs when they come into the room. The first time I discovered him, he startled the hell out of me, lol. He looked up at me as if to say, "What?" Cats are mysterious little creatures, lol.

(20,453 posts)I get there first, and he insists that after washing my hands, he take another drink. We actually have a small water fountain for our elder baby. Still, nothing like a fresh drink from clean hands at the sink fountain..

(31,514 posts)He knows where I'm headed when I have my coffe mug in hand, so he runs ahead and waits just on the other side of the door so he can leap out at me when I walk into the kitchen. When I head back to the living room, it's the same drill in reverse.
Since I live alone, I rarely close the bathroom door, so there's no need to race. He just saunters in and out at will.
